Yeah vet said spaniels have ear canals not designed to drain. Poor buddy lived in pain. I was anal about trimming ears, wiping down ears etc and I’d get one ear clear and the other would get infected. Vet performed a total ear ablation where they remove all the inner ear tissue so now no more infections but he lives with muffled hearing so hunting days are done. Next Boykin will def be a short hair. Mine has long jerry curl and YES, cuckleburrs are the devil!

I have had Boykins since 1981, when nobody this side of east Ga. knew what they were. They are great little dogs. That being said, size does matter as in their prime Sugar Ray Leonard isn't gonna whip Mohammed Ali day in and day out. With more folks becoming aware of Boykins you are starting to see more in the Hunt Test/Field Trail games. They can do the work. Two weeks ago David Lambert to had 2 Super Reteiever series passes and and 2 AKC Spaniel passes and picked up his WDX, Working Dog Excellent. His dog, Boudreaux is HRCH, OR, WDX, SH, MHR titled. A real busy/productive weekend in any dog owner's book. A fella in Tallahassee has a dog that has retrieved over 2600 bird in her 1st 2yrs of hunting. So they can do the work.
with the ear issue trim the underside of ear flap and below ear with a #10 blade so ear can get air to help it dry. Can also squirt a couple of cc's of white vinegar in ears after they finish in water as it helps create an acidic environment that impedes bacteria growth. I have also had success fighting ear infection with a concoction of 4 oz alcohol, 4 oz white vinegar, 4 oz betadine, 16 drops of gentian violet, and 3 tablespoons of boric acid. use it 2x a day for a week, then 1 x a day for a week, the every other day day for a week. I put it in a squirt type 'ketchup' bottle for the dollar store as it make it easier to administer. it Works, but do t outside as it will stain like grape Kool-aid.

Appreciate reading all the informative post about the breed and it is enlightening. My cousin has a Boykin who is a hunting machine but too wired for my taste. I’m a lab guy and my boy will run circles around the Boykin while being chill around company, kids, etc... when the Boykin is constantly into shite and having to be constantly corrected. Love the Boykin though, calm and focused as frick on the water

Well if y’all are posting pictures I might as well throw mine in there. 48 lbs of the best dog I have ever owned. The only other dogs I have owned were Labs. Extremely smart and amazes me all the time how focused and still he is when waiting for the action to start.

I've had a Boykin for 5-years now and she's done everything I've asked of her. She's picked up a few hundred ducks and earned her HRCH. Mine is a daughter of Brandywine's Drake and is bred to Blaine's dog Buck which will be her first litter as timing just never worked out before. We are pretty excited about the potential of the litter and intend to keep a pup.
