Have to put a new motor on a Ranger 188rt aluminum boat. The boat and motor are 5 years old. The motor has 55 hours on it and its an Evinrude 115 etec. One cylinder on it has no compression. Boat shop said motor is no good. How hard is it for me to buy a new Mercury 115 and install it on boat myself? Is warranty good if you install yourself. How much would it be to get boat shop to install it?

Dealer isn’t allowed to sell those without install. Where are you located?

Very simple process. Warranty would be voided if dealer does not install anything above 25 HP I think.....I know there is a limit. Its a scam...installing an outboard of ANY size is simple....matching the prop can be challenging, even dealers get it wrong...and that is the reason I have been told for the dealer having to install.

So I’m good on warranty if I do the install? Just making sure what you’re saying. Do you know ballpark price of a dealer doing the install?

No if you do the install yourself the warranty will be voided. I doubt if you could buy a new outboard above about 25 HP from a dealer that you intended to install yourself....it may be possible but its my understanding that if an engine is still in the warranty period, whether it is purchased new or used, if it is installed by anyone other than a dealer the warranty is no longer valid.

If your controls will work with the new engine the install price would probably (and this is a pure guess on my part) run somewhere around $1000. I had a 60HP Mercury tiller installed on my duck boat (I bought it with an hour on it from a dealer in Washington State) and they removed the existing 40HP Yamaha and mounted the 60HP Mercury for $300. They also mounted a jack plate that I supplied. Those were both tillers though...they were both through bolted and required sealing the old holes with 3M 5200, drilling the new holes and mounting the jack plate and engine. They quoted $500 but when I told them I wasn't overly concerned about the warranty they did it for $300. Mounting is about the same for all of them, weight being the only difference. Connecting steering and controls is pretty straight forward...it can be done in an hour or so IF everything existing will work with the new engine. New controls will raise the cost significantly. It is, at best, 3-4 hours for a competent mechanic with a lift and the tools to do it, if the controls will work. The controls can be a pain depending on the boat.

What brand motor? Mercury or Yamaha? It has an Evinrude on it now.

Call Real Deal Marine in Pineville. They cannot sell you anything but a Suzuki, but will give you contact of a dealership in Mississippi that has the absolute lowest prices on Mercury motors (4k savings on a 150 - maybe more for a 115). They will ship it to Real Deal and they will install on your boat. Quote for me was 800 to install, plus a new prop.

I went from Yamaha to Mercury...but both were tillers. I could be wrong but neither will work with a Evinrude control box so that means new controls which will add significantly to the cost. The steering control may work and may not....I am not certain. The tube is pretty much universal but the attachment point can be different even with the same manufacturer.

I have a buddy who installed his own mercury on a bullet at a dealer on his way back from Tennessee. Purchased boat from manufacturer and purchased motor from a dealer who agreed to let him install it at their facility. It is doable. That mercury dealer was in Alabama.

Man you shouldn’t have posted that info on here, it’s just a matter of time before that dealer gets his license pulled by mercury now. I know the dealer in Tn used to sell crate motors but mercury hammer them for it when the new four strokes came out.

Do you have any experience of rebuilt motors from Landry’s? Seems like mixed results from people who purchase rebuilt motors but haven’t run accross anyone who has purchased one from Landry’s.
