My dogs dropped some fine pups. They are about 4 and a half weeks old. Already tearing up deer legs in the yard. Anyone else here have tracking dogs?

We had a Lacy many years ago. She was an awesome dog and I would love to have another one.

Currently have a 3 year old catahoula I got at 6 weeks old and started training at 12 weeks that is becoming(already was good but he is really starting to dial in) an incredible blood trail dog and he LOVES to find them alive and fight em. Its almost to the point where I would rather put him on a blood trail than hunt myself.
Almost bought a blue lacy when I got him and was headed to go get one when I found him for free from some real good bloodline. Got him free bc he is just black with brindle legs and not the more desired merle color patterns but that is just fine with me.

Are any pups still available for sale?

Really confused here. Is that considered "deer hunting"?

That looks pretty shitty. At least finish it off

while that video is not the best representation of what it's really meant to be it is tracking/trailing and is an extremely valuable resource to have available. Unfortunately not all shots turn out perfect and the animal does not always fall immediately even on good shots. Animals sometimes leave no blood trail to follow, hunters make bad shots, animals move at the last instant of the shot resulting in a poor hit, rain washes out blood trails etc which all lead to difficult recoveries.
a good trail dog can smell the faintest of blood that you cannot even see or just smell the animal outright. a poorly hit animal may go a long way and still be alive but suffering and the dog can lead to a much faster recovery and to finish the animal off as humanely as possible vs allowing it die slowly and likely never find it.
It is extremely satisfying training a dog and have it really perform and find deer for people especially kids that very likely would not have found them otherwise.
after watching the video again it is not as bad as it first looked just took a little to long in getting the finishing shot on them. Ideally you can get that done immediately on reaching the animal but sometimes they run and you have to get the dog completely clear before any shot is taken. The first one in that video seems like maybe it was allowed to go on a little longer than necessary for the camera but the 2nd one there was never an opportunity for a safe finishing shot as far as what the video showed IMO until the one he took.

putting a blood dog on a live deer and letting him fight him is a great way to ruin a good blood dog.

I didnt watch it either, but there have been several times where I could not take a finishing shot for a pretty long time just because there wasnt a safe direction to shoot or the dog was in the way. Had I been wearing a camera it would have looked like I was just letting the dog play with the deers face, but there were people around helping look and you cant just shoot until you locate everyone.
Not saying that's what happened there of course since I didnt watch, but it might not be what it seems.

I understand we all have situations where we walk up on live deer and have to finish them. But that video is a bad look all around

never said it was intentional. no way to know they are alive or not until it is found and aint like can stop the dog from fighting it till you get there. I have had a bunch of them over the years and have NEVER had one stop trialing bc of a fight. If anything it makes em want to do it even more.

I'd like to hear this explanation. At his prime I would have put my dog against any, he was spectacular. He tangled with many of them

can't say for sure he is putting them on to early or not. Last year I found one for a buddy 28 hours after the shot and deer was still very much alive. All likelihood it was prob to early that is putting the dog on it just never know. there are situations that the sooner you get the dog on it the better but that is always a tough call(high temps where it will spoil in more than a couple hours, areas with extremely high coyote population that are likely to get to it before you do if wait to long, etc) It is pretty much always at least a few hours before I put mine on one and 19 of 20 of them are dead when found but you just never know it is gonna be until it happens.

quote:True. But two in the same day being found with that much fight isnt a good sign. And the filming of it.....

Look, the guy in the video maybe a good ethical hunter. But we have to be more aware as hunters and not post videos like that. It just isnt a good look and sends a poor message IMHO

The last one I had to shoot, i put my eyes on it for the first time about 6 hours after it was shot and if the dog didnt have him by the face he would have still been running and have died a few days later. Cruel looking as it was, we wouldnt have gotten that deer otherwise and it would have died and wasted.
Watching your dog catch and fight a crippled deer is fun, just like watching them catch a pig or a coon is fun. I'm not going to fuss at the dog for finally catching up to a deer and trying to kill it.
