Bird ID

Bush hogging today and saw two birds that flushed up out of a briar patch and I don't know what they were. Kind of a dirty looking color bout the color of a rabbit with a black head. Big birds that were slow to take off and didn't fly very far. The bigger one looked to be 14 to 16 inches long head to tail. I was thinking a pheasant, but they are not native here in North Georgia, and didn't look like anything I see on google images. I'm not a hunter, so I don't know anything about them. Any ideas what they might be? I actually felt bad about knocking down the briars they were holed up in.

Go to a birds of North America book and find it. Search that name on the interweb and find a picture. Post that picture and the name of the bird so we will all know. Otherwise I can't help you with what you've given me.

It wasn’t quail was it? That really doesn’t match with the length you gave, but the color, head color, and the fact that you flushed them makes me think of bob whites. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they are in pairs right now

I saw an American Woodcock in Mid Tennessee a few weeks ago. Never have seen those before.

I would love to see a 14-16" quail.

Me too, all smoked, on a plate with some fried taters and green beans.

Google ruffed grouse.
Let me know if that was it. Only real upland ground bird of the Georgia mountains. Famous for its “lawnmower starting“ sounding call, but hard to get your eyes on. I’ve heard them a lot up there but still haven’t gotten more than a fleeting glance.

There are definitely grouse in n Georgia....we used to hunt them fairly regularly....but I'd be shocked if they were around any folks....they usually live about in a holler, normally near a creek, at least 4 ridges off the nearest gravel road.....takes a helluva man to hunt grouse in N. Georgia....they are not a lot of them and they seriously love to be as far away as possible and in the thickest cover imaginable....and when they flush you know it cause it sounds like a jet leaving the tarmac....like a 20 pound quail or something. If it was grouse they will most likely still be in the area and will be drumming this time of year most likely....listen for that and if you hear it you'll know you've got something pretty damned special on your place.

Ruffed grouse is the closest thing I've seen. Pictures don't show a black head like I thought I saw, but maybe it was just shadow. We aren't that far out in the country though and where I saw them was just maybe 100 yards off the road. I'd never seen a ground bird that big that wasn't a turkey or chicken

ruffed grouse.
My guess. They used to be found every once in a while outside that range map, in the Northeast AL mountains - back when I was just a children.

Pretty cool. I had no idea that ruffed grouse were so far south.

Ah. when I lived up near Huntsville, I was in a hunting club out north of Estill Fork. There were trails up in there that just went forever, in the summer time, we used to just go up and ride all weekend, it's some rough stuff, but beautiful up in there. Creeks, waterfalls, and no people at all.
