alright Big Lake guys....here's the skinny:

got a trip planned in early March, one buddy backed out and the other buddy has never really fished. I really need to put him on a few fish if at all possible. I don't care if it takes soaking some stink bait on the bottom for drum, just something w/ a good pull. I don't know Big Lake too well, but we'll be launching at the launch next to Cocohoe's bar and grill most likely. We're staying at Laberge(gotta have some entertainment in case fish aren't biting), so if there's a different launch, I'm open to suggestions.

TIA

Always had good luck at the Grand Bayou cut (and back a ways) and the old jetties. The oyster reefs will produce at times, get yourself a good map of the lake and have fun.

If nothing else a bunch of gaff tops is fun to catch.

sounds like you just need bite the bullet to hire a guide. March can be tough due to the winds. Heard they closed off the wiers.

Weather will be a key factor. If you want to catch trout they are usually not too far from deep water. So stay near the ship channel and intercoastal. The fish wiil pull out of the channel and up onto the flats in Turner bay when it warms up in the afternoon. LNG can be good. Also don't be afraid to run upriver. Sometime they are congregatin near the saltwater barrier.

Edit : If you have had a lot of rain recently forget going upriver and the north end. Head south.

If you just want to catch fish, fish the jeties. Big Lake has some monster trout in it.

March is generally windy as heck. Given all the rain we've had this past week, it will take a month to flush all that fresh water thru the system, so you should fish south. I'd try west cove, around the weirs or at the jetties if it isn't too rough.

Of it gets too windy, we may go to Black Lake. We caught a pile of reds back there last time.

You are going to be fishing one of the premier lakes for big trout. Please take advantage of it.

If i had to guess with all the fresh water I would head as far south as you can.

The salinity has been low farther north and I haven't been hearing any reports of trout caught.

Don't fish in West Cove, there aren't any trout there

Anyone know if they are still catching good fish in the cold times near the humps of the LNG terminal?

East Cove Hotline 337/598 4235

Supposedly the weirs open when the salinity in the lake is at a certain level. It should be fresh enough in the Lake after all this rain to allow them to open.
