I bought a rem 700 CDL And put a 2.5-15 Z6 swvorski (spelling?) on it
I currently use barnes vortec in 150 grain and group dimes at 100 and golf ball at 300 using a good rest.
So that being said, will the 150 grain hold up out to 500-600 or not? I hear the all copper bullets tend to walk around past 300 yards. And I’m not any kind of expert at all with any of this, I just get good advice on what friends use and buy it.

Long story short I’m going to be hunting In Wyoming next year and want to be confident at 500-600 yards

BC on copper bullets are lower than equivalent lead because they are light for length. It's still fine though. You will just have more holdover or more to dial. Get comfortable at shooting at that range before you shoot an animal that far.

The Sierra gamekings get good marks for long range . My wife shoots the 165 in her 308. No complaints.

178g hornady eld-x

Also, what’s the twist on your barrel?

Id probably try some heavy 180-200gr stuff.

Riding in a car so cant really look up the 150s, but im not shooting a 300wsm just to shoot 150gr ammo. Can do that in the 308 and save your shoulder.

Factory loads? What are you hunting? The 150s would be fine for antelope and deer at that range. For elk I would shoot the heaviest partition available, but the 150 would likely work fine still.

I dont like all copper bullets except for tough game at close range. On light game at 600 yards expansion is going to be unreliable even out of the 300 short nag.

My general rule of thumb is I always shoot the heaviest stuff available for everything, preferably partitions since they perform well at all speeds.

The twist is 1:10
The Sierra game Kings in 165 are the only bullet my ruger mk3 will shoot accurately, so I am definitely confident in those
I’m shooting factory barnes vortec in 150 now,
But 99.5% of my shots are 200 or closer. Usually 75-100 yards honestly.
I do believe I should swap to at least a 180 grain lead bullet for that hunt, hence the thread.
My scope has ballistic turret so I can leave It set for the barnes, as well as the “new” round, so that’s not or should not be a pain in the arse at least

Its not going to be the same for Wyoming as it is at home. I'll second what the other guys are saying. You need to be shooting the heavies. A 300 shooting 150's or 165's is pointless imho. Much easier calibers to use in that same weight class. The biggest and only plus to the 300's is being able to push heavy bullets

Wyoming equals wind. Try a 180 Nosler Accubond to buck the wind.

With a 1-10 twist you should be able to stabilize as heavy as you want to go.

For out west, that 178 eld-x would be the absolute lightest I'd go.

would probably lean toward 200s

The same can be said for all of the belted magnums, but for some reason speed is what sells them.

Length of barrel and twist rate is pertinent info here.

Mine is a 1:10 it likes 200gr and above.

Cool, I’m going to swap over and get a few boxes of the heavy stuff and try it out. Last hunt of the year today anyhow

Pronghorn this year, then elk and mule deer as I get enough priority points built up. The elk hunt that caught my eye was a horseback up to 10k and base camp in a big tent. More research as I get close to the points needed.
