They aren’t some flavor of the year reel made in a Korean factory.
Lews and Abu have been around for a long time. You do know only the high end Shimanos are made in Japan. The make the rest in Malaysia.

What he’s saying is that all of those brands contract through Doyo to make their reels, and they’re all made in the same factory. It’s abu, lews, pfleuger, and some bass pro reels under that OEM. Quantum and Okuma use Banax in Korea. Doesn’t make them any better or worse as far as I’m concerned, it just is what it is, long as the OEM isn’t in China. Actually the ones they sell on the Asian market directly as Doyo are twice as expensive for some models. Same exact design as the American lews or abu but whole frame will be aluminum, crazy Asian spool, etc. Shimano does their high end stuff at their factory in japan and the rest at a factory in Malaysia, but last I heard they own both not contract deal. Diawa similar, high end stuff in japan. Abu still makes a few high end round reels in Sweden, which why a few people may be pointing out abu isn’t like the others. Bass pro buys designs from everyone and shifts their contracts around all the time.

That sounds right but it really doesn't matter. Not sure how that caught on as a marketing tactic but any manufacturer can stick bearings in random places. What matters is the quality of those bearings, and the tolerances and materials of the reel.

I find the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier to be great reels for the price. When they run their annual spring fishing sale, you can get one for under $50. If they break, I'll just put them aside for spare parts or throw them away without loosing sleep.

Yes, Abu has been around a long time, but they only build the round reels. The low profile ones come from one of the Korean factories.
The point is not that these are bad reels. The point is, they are all basically the same. One can't say Lew's is better than Garcia or 13 or any of the other because the same factories are making all of them. Just a matter of whether or not you're actually getting the tier of reel you're paying for.

Good points. Like I stated earlier, I am not saying any of those companies are putting out bad reels. However, Shimano and Daiwa are sourcing and building their reels, so I will stick with those companies. Parts are readily available online.
Not to mention resale value on the Shimano's is very high on the secondary market. You can look online and see the price of older Curado's and Chronarch's. Some are selling for almost what they were brand new. Its crazy.

I’m a Lews fan. But they need lubing more than others.

Pick a brand you like and find their best reel at the $150 price point.
Abu Gracia, shimano, Lews, pfleuger, okuma, Daiwa, Bass pro, etc....
At that price point you arent going to find a bad reel. Pick the one you like the best.

I have been throwing an ambassador 5500 c3 for over ten years and I love it. The bearings are a little loud but I probably just need a lube job. Today I was casting a weightless trick worm into the wind about 70 feet and never backlashed. But it's a reel I've been using a long time, so I like to take some skill credit too.

After you service your reel it will cast 140 feet into the wind

Thinking about it, it is more than ten years old. It has nibble marks on the handle from when my puppy got ahold of it one day, that dog has been dead for 3 years and was 11 when put down. So the reel is at least 14 years old.
I don't know if they still "make them like they used to" but the one I have is great. If I lost this one, I would take my chances and buy another, in a heartbeat.

I’m a diawa fan.
On eBay or few big diawa tackle stores they carry Tatulas Sv’s $135 to $139.

Those are great reels. Really easy to cast. Just didn’t fit my hand for some reason. I would def recommend however.

I get the impression there's alot of people here who think having a shiny glitter boat and big Vroom Vroom motor makes them better fishermen. I think some people here need to spend more time practicing with the tools of their craft.
