If its really cold than a smartwool/merino wool cant be beat – it aint yer paw paws wool long johns. It also breathes and sheds moisture so even after you sweat it keeps you warm. But probably for LA a good poly layer/UA is OK. I love merino wool socks. I had some padnahs work in the arctic for a couple of years and its smart wool and canada goose gear

i have a redhead base layer from bass pro that works great and won't break the bank

Personally will not buy UA or anything else that expensive. I prefer some good 7 dollar long johns from walmart. Spend money on a nice jacket.

Then you have never worn it.

Best base layer bang for the buck. Need it for outdoors and snow sports.
Edit: Bought this jacket online (and pants) for $77/each (retail $199) but it's a little thin for my liking.

I haven't worn them. I already spend too much money to duck hunt during the winter months and I just have never spent the extra cash for base layer stuff. It should also be said that I am no OB baller.

I wouod just take the next little bit of money you put aside for a nice jacket, and invest in a good base layer. You will find it more essential to your warmth and will not need such a nice jacket.

The UA base layer will help me see, call and shoot more ducks (green heads particularly) right?
Seriously though, Ill think about that. I was going to buy a new jacket but I could hold off. Thanks Nico!

This is now high on my radar.
Gaston, the Expedition 4 looks like the only one that comes as a 1 piece suit which I really like.
Would it be major overkill in Louisiana? The coldest I hunt is Arkansas with temps averaging 20-30 during December/January.
Im sure the 2 or 3 weight shirt/pants would be better, I just really like the idea of that suit.

No but I have this little Mexican for hire. Keen eye, crack shot, does a Susie mallard comeback call with his tongue

I have the Capilene 3. Dad first bought me a pair when I was a young chap. I went and got more as I got older.
Honestly, I have never been cold anywhere that Capilene touches. Now I just need them to make socks and gloves.

Thank you
Adding this new-found capeline to my Christmas list
I have worn UA compression baselayer for a few years...It works great to keep me warm, but I would like something a little more loose fitting, and the turtleneck rubbing drives me fricking nuts.

That expedition weight stuff is literally for expeditions. Spending 4 weeks climbing up the side of a granite face in the arctic circle type stuff.
The 2 is really the sweat spot, dries fast and stays super warm. The reason why it's worth the money are the seams. They will last a lifetime. I try not to ever put mine in the dryer, but literally these things will last forever.

Damn, it is really hard to pass up a $200 suit of that caliber, even though it would not be practical.
I guess I should step down and get the shirt / pants individually so I am not sweating my arse off at 8 a.m.

Polartec Power Dry ECWCS stuff is very good in the silk weight version. Very warm for the weight, fast drying and second skin fit. Cabela's carries a branded version now, and they're around $65 or $66 for a top/bottom set.

They have fitted (looser than compression) versions and crew necks are available (although not always in all colors) - I love my mock turtleneck, but have wondered how much rubbing it would do for extended wear.

I'm in Kansas and those December/January duck hunts can be real cold. I wear Under Armour 3.0 base layer, fleece lined camo, and then my jacket and waders. I think the biggest thing when it's super cold is to have your neck covered with a hoodie or a neck gaiter.
