What would be? 7mm magnum? Great round, best all around? Stay on subject.......or we can broaden this discussion and keep it going!

For instance "best 7mm", "best 30 cal", etc......

7mag-You need to shoot a bullet that stay together and punches through. My brother own a 7mag and had problems until he started shooting better bullets. It's a great gun with the right loads.

I love the 300 win I have killed many deer with it and with a good bullet it punches a nice hole in and out with out blowing them up.

A good shot can kill deer all day long with a 22-250 mine has killed 7 deer by my daughter and neice. Not one ran more than 50yds!

My next gun will be a 300 wsm reloaded they are bad arse!

No way to 7mag or any mag for that matter. As I posted before it would be:

one of the short calibers under .30 cal pushing a 120ish grain bullet over 2,400 but under 3,000.

I'm not enamored with my 300 wsm right now. First, the short action requires I seat the bullet too deep for my liking. I'm going to a lighter bullet to try to remedy that, but kind of defeats the purpose. I also don't like the 22" barrel. Hind sight 20/20 I wouldn't buy the same rifle or round. I'd go 300 rum or the ole 300 winny.

I'd say 7mm-08... Short action allows a lighter gun which is easier to carry. Less recoil than a .270 or 30-06. Its a damn accurate cartridge... Plus you can load it down for varmint, use standard loads for deer and hog, or you can load heavy for elk/black bear. Only a handful of guns and cartridges can make that claim.

Hard to reply when I don't think that's slow. I'll revise with: 120ish at under 3,200 but over 2,600

My current go to gun is a .243. It pushes 100 grains at under 3,000, so pushing 120 just under 3,000 is a step up. That will be plenty flat and not kick like a mule. Off the top of my head, the contenders would be,
.260
7mm-08
6.5 Grendel
6.8 spc

My FIL & BIL have killed more deer with one than everyone on this board put together, but a 7mm-08 will do the same thing in a lighter rifle with less recoil and less powder to reload.

I really think the cartridges based on the 06 casing are dead. I mean, there is nothing wrong with them, it just seems like development of new rounds is all going short and fat.

If I could only have one rifle in North America (which I would say would be the definition of best all-purpose hunting rifle) it would be the .300 Win Mag with the 7mm Mag coming in a close 2nd.

Again, that would be the best ALL-PURPOSE hunting rifle. I could use the .300 win mag on any game from the southeast to Alaska. I wouldn't want to be standing in front of a bear in Alaska with anything less than a .300.

With that being say my 2 deer rifles (when I deer hunt) are a .257 Weatherby and a .308. In the southeast they will take anything that walks.

Trying to get an Elk trip planned to New Mexico in the next few years and I'll probably get either the .300 win mag or a .300 wby.

It really is a wonderful round. I'm shooting 115 grain bt out of it. I don't really deer hunt much and haven't had the gun but 3 years. Shot one with it that was about 250yds away and it dropped in it's tracks. When I bought it my buddy that took me hunting just wanted to see how far I could shoot a doe with it.

When I sighted it in I put 3 within 6 inches at 250yds.

The first rifle I ever shot. Used my dads old gun(the one his dad gave him..blah blah blah), and dropped a nice 8pt at 200yrds with it.

Since then I've moved to a mans gun. 7mm Mag with Federal Premium Vital Shock. I haven't had a deer run more then 0 yards in 4 years.

I own the .257, .300, and .416 Weatherby Magnums. Weatherby is one of only a handful of rifle makers who offer a full line of guns for southpaws like myself.

I love the 257, but must admit I'm partial to the 300...

In louisiana, it's one of these without question.
