LGS said something to me about it last week but I had forgotten about it and then I got an email this morning.
The M2 is moving away from the inertia operating system and will be using the same gas piston system as the M4. Will have a 5 position telescoping stock. 18.5" barrel.
Not sure how much different this will be from the M4.
Called the M2-G1
Going to be more expensive. Around $1800
So, if you wanted an M4 but didn't want to pay $2500 for one, this might be your gun.
Or just buy the Beretta 1301...

Maybe I'm thinking of another model, but over the years they've been really really proud of the inertia OS. that seemed to have been a major selling point in their adverts. what happened to change all that?

Still is. Its fine for hunting shotguns and all their hunting shotguns as far as I know are inertia. Gas is preferable for a combat shotgun/rifle because it is more tolerant of bad operating habits. They are more difficult to bang out of battery, they will cycle reliably without resistance on the buttstock, etc.
I love me an inertia operated benelli but its not what I would want for a combat shotgun. The m4 and 1301 are the gold standards here.

To be clear, the regular M2 is not going away as far as I'm aware. The M2-G1 is something they were originally asked to build by Taran Butler. Think it'll be more of a niche option for competition and tactical use.

So its probably to help get the cycle speed up as well. Gas guns can be made to run much faster than inertia ones.

My dad has a 1301. It’s a badass gun and can’t see spending almost twice the $$$$$ on the M4.

I have a 1301 as well. It is almost too fun to shoot. For the price I don’t think there’s any better option
