Beginners or disposable salt water rod/reel

I'm making a guys trip next weekend to salt water fish. I'm generally a freshwater guy and only saltwater fish once maybe twice a year. I need to pick up a rod and reel for next weekend but I don't want to break the bank especially since it'll be used so rarely. Anyone recommend a setup for such an occasion?

Fishing for what, exactly? Penn makes a few good spinning combos in multiple sizes that also work well in freshwater for around the 100$ range. I might suggest looking at the Penn Fierce II combo. You won't regret spending the money, even if it's not exactly at the "dirt cheap" end of the price range.

I use my reels for both fresh and saltwater. Just do the maintenance. I'm by no means an expert. Penn or Shimano has been 2 good ones for me

You can get a Shimano Sedona 2500 for $65 and probably find a medium action 6.5' rod for $50. It will work just fine for a summer or two. Get the Stradic if you want to upgrade the reel.

This will last well more than a summer or two, especially with little use. Those sedonas are very solid reels for their price range.

I also mostly fresh water fish, but just use my shimano baitcasters and rinse with the water hose when I'm done.

Sedona was on sale at BPS Sunday for $39

Obligatory H20 Mettle mention
I have 2 and use them exclusively for salt water. I like them for the price they are and the easy return process at Academy.

The key with whatever you buy or use (seen some suggestions about using a freshwater or bass rod, personally, I would avoid that if you really like your reel) if you want it to last is to rinse it off thoroughly with freshwater as soon as you can when finished. dot use pressure, as that can drive salt/sand further into the reel. Just an open hose with the water flowing slowly, about like you would if you were taking a drink. watch the color of the water and wait util it comes off the real clear or at least mostly clear. Make sure to hit all parts of the real. Also rinse off the rod, particularly the tip and all the guides) and terminal tackle for good measure. I always end by spraying my reel, eyes, and terminal tackle thoroughly with Reel Magic.
I've had an Okuma and a Penn reel for over a decade that still work fantastic. Can't go wrong with either if you're looking for a new setup. IMO Okuma is a great bang for the buck reel. Penn will be easier to find, though and are rock solid for saltwater. Spinning reels are the way to go.
Check out the pawn shops for a Penn rod and real combo, that is how I got my oldest Penn reel.
I assume a charter or fishing from a boat? If you're going surf fishing, it'll be way tougher on the equipment, might want to just get a cheap saltwater combo from Walmart or Academy and plan on tossing it after. If it is still serviceable next year, that's a win
Disposable from Academy
Cheaper Penn from Academy

Are you talking about inshore or offshore fishing?
For inshore (reds & specks), you don't need to buy a separate rod & reel. Whatever you use for freshwater is fine.
For offshore (snapper), the owner of the boat usually provides the rods & reels. Whenever I invite someone to go offshore in my boat, I don't expect them to bring their own gear.
