My son is 8 now and I started him on a red ryder at 6. They aren't the same red ryders that we had as kids, the newer ones suck. BUT it served its purpose to teach basic shooting and safety for firearms. He took that red ryder on every hunt and in his mind, there would be no problem killing a deer with it ;) I just made sure he was very aware of having the gun on safe and muzzle control, etc. The deal was that as soon as he could show me he was able to follow the basic safety rules, then he would get a pellet gun. So, start slow and make sure he understands gun safety before moving him up to something that will cause significant damage. My son has shot 410, 20ga, 22, but he is not to the stage where I would turn him loose with anything more than a pellet gun at this time.

This is the reason to get them. My boy is 8 too.

Thanks everyone. This thread convinced me to get him a Red Rider until he can demonstrate he’s responsible with it. Especially since we live in a neighborhood with houses on all 4 sides of us.

This thread has also given me some ideas as to how to progress after the RR.

I’ve already been looking at DIY backstops that I can build, slap some outdoor paint on it and leave in the backyard so I can shoot with him. If anyone has any ideas for backstops please post them.

I’m looking forward to getting my old 880 out and bonding with him.

Does anyone remember a Red Ryder looking gun that didnt have Red Ryder on it? This would have been around 1977.

No forestock?

then borrow my Benjamin because their Crossmans sucked so bad.

I will not argue that Benjamin is far high quality than Crossman but for a kid's fir pellet gun, the Crossman is plenty and will be a lot easier to handle (lighter).

Many a future hunter have been permanently scared by the shitty performance of the Crosman 760.

You can just use a large cardboard box for those red Ryder's. Put some crumpled newspaper in the back it you'd like. Some shots may go through but they'll just fall in the back of it 5-6 ft.

They are not powerful and will bounce back off of something like plywood. You could take a piece of plywood with the front open and the back angled into the dirt to direct any shots down. That would likely work.

But the negative is they aren't powerful enough to stick the bb into most things like a wood fence or tree. So they will ricochet. As a kid we would actually set up targets off the side of things or behind logs and intentionally ricochet the shots off rocks or trees.

Man I have so many good memories of BB guns.

I grew up in the burbs or on a military base so I never had places to shoot my BB gun. I think you made a good choice. Better to over use it and grow out of it then never be able to use it. Plus, who grows out of a red Ryder. I could have fun with one right now for hours.

Dumb nieighbor kid lodged one in the joint of my thumb when I was around 12. I’m sure that cost my parents a good bit.

I say start him with something a little less powerful and let him learn and move up.

our rule when growing up was that during bb/pellet gun wars you were limited to one pump only when shooting at each other, and you could only aim below the shoulders and at legs. Amazing no one lost an eye.

I was never scared of getting shot from the neck down, but i was scared to death to get shot in the eye.

We were dumb kids.

Daisy Buck is the version of the RR with no fore stock and a shorter LoP.
