Without a great place to shoot, I'd get the ole red rider spring operated gun. It's not very powerful so you could fairly safely shoot it in a 1 acre yard.

My first was a 760 and I still have it. Great gun and with or without a scope it's sweet. I've shot many a squirrels and birds with it, shot a bat once on a camping trip and my dad tore me a knew one I'll never forget. But the 760 will do some damage, definitely break windows and the kids can hurt themselves. The basic Daisy's are pretty weak.

I killed many squirrels and several rabbits with the crossman 760 22 caliber

eta: my mom used to plant a fall garden at the edge of our yard next to a field. It would fill up with rabbits. One day she asked me to defend her garden.

I felt like a sniper picking off German SS

My soon to be 9yr old bought this with his own money last year at Cabelas. Daisy 901. It will pop eyes out of a squirrels head with proper shot placement. He’s getting a scope upgrade for Christmas

Thanks for all the replies.

This is what I had as a kid and it’s sitting on my lap right now.

What’s the difference between this and the Red Ryder?

And what’s the difference between these and an air rifle (Benjamin?)?

A Benjamin has much more power (fps) and is a solid piece and has been for decades.

I can go to Dollar General and buy a fake busted arse looking foot (for Halloween) at 95% off today and I'm sure that's what you did. I guess you did that for the picture because all the toes are where the should be on your real foot.

I have jacked up feet. Big toe smaller than 2nd toe and they are flat as frick.

But your wife don’t mind them keeping hers warm at nights when you’re not around

If you can find an old 1938 that had the tube and no safety. That tab on the side that you load into was designed by communists

I had a Benjamin .177 with s little scope in it. I could shoot pecan hulls from the top of the trees. I somehow lost track of it and got another, never found one to shoot like that at all. The first one was a hand me down from a cousin when I was 10. So it was produced prob in about 72.

My boy enjoyed his Red Ryder, but you couldn’t hit shite w it. Got him that little Crosmsn B.B. gun and he loves it. Killed a dove w it on opening day in the backyard

9 years old? Get him a 22 rifle.
My daughter was 5 when she got a red ryder. I set her up and let her shoot a box. She could hit the box but she doesnt understand iron sights.

I got her a Savage 22lr for Christmas. I will mount a cheap Nikon scope on it and take her to the range because next year she will kill a deer with my 270WSM.

As long as you give them ear protection, and the 22 doesnt kick, they will feel comfortable. Once deer hunting rolls around you hand them a big rifle. Dont let kids practice shooting it because the kick and sound will be too much. Only when deer hunting. They will never know the difference.

Quality. And Benjamin may shoot a little faster. But my daisys never gave me any issues.

Completely forgot about this one. I think it was my first. I was obsessed with pellet guns

My brother still has a BB in his liver from a Benjamin that went through his shirt after a neighbor kid got careless.

While I know there's people that buy their kids a new gun every year from the age of 4 and they are shooting .50 cal at 12, the OP said first gun. I still think every kid should start off with a cheap B.B. Gun that's not very strong. That way they can casually shoot it anytime you are in the outdoors with a little space and enjoy shooting.

The problem with anything stronger then a red Ryder style is they have to be watched over, need serious space, and they can be lethally dangerous. Outside of a broken window, if you wear eye protection there's not much a red Ryder can do damage wise.

I use to love the camping trips when I was 8-12 and would have the BB gun with a Paracord sling on 24/7 just shooting anything and everything all weekend.

Dumb nieighbor kid lodged one in the joint of my thumb when I was around 12. I’m sure that cost my parents a good bit.

I say start him with something a little less powerful and let him learn and move up.

Mine is the kind with the round pump handle. It was always a better gun than the newer ones my friends had.

My son is 8 now and I started him on a red ryder at 6. They aren't the same red ryders that we had as kids, the newer ones suck. BUT it served its purpose to teach basic shooting and safety for firearms. He took that red ryder on every hunt and in his mind, there would be no problem killing a deer with it ;) I just made sure he was very aware of having the gun on safe and muzzle control, etc. The deal was that as soon as he could show me he was able to follow the basic safety rules, then he would get a pellet gun. So, start slow and make sure he understands gun safety before moving him up to something that will cause significant damage. My son has shot 410, 20ga, 22, but he is not to the stage where I would turn him loose with anything more than a pellet gun at this time.

I was born in 69. My cousin and I were really close, he had a Red Rider. If I remember correctly mine was a Daisy..but no mention of Red Rider on it. After reading this thread, I looked at the history of the Red Rider. I can find no mention of them making one that looked like what I remember mine looking like.

Both were awesome. We would sit under those clouds of blackbirds in the cotton fields behind his house and aimlessly shoot into the flocks. ONE bird was hit and fluttered down. We were 1 for 1,000,000.

Does anyone remember a Red Ryder looking gun that didnt have Red Ryder on it? This would have been around 1977.
