Looking for a rifle for my wife she dosen't hunt much but when she does I would like for her to have her own rifle. I went to bass pro and looked at the Model 770 Whittail pro 243 combo. Anyone have any experience with these? I know its not a high quality rifle but would it work for a few trips a year to the woods? I also have a nikon scope I will replace the bushnell with. Any segestions for the best rifle in this price range?

Heard the 770's quality is really lacking. I was looking into rifles recently and found for the money a Howa makes a really good rifle. They used to make Weatherby's. Howa has a youth model that may fit your wife better but also comes with an adult stock and scope.I think they were around $600

Remington 700 adl. Should be able to pick it up for around 300. The 770 is junk.

Hard to beat.

My dad shoots this in .243 and wears em out. I shoot one in a .270.

Rem makes a model 7 in a camo finish in 243 which would be good for the wife or kids. And you could use the scope you already have.
And if you ever wanted to sell the gun you would be able to get most of your money back.

770 and 710 are junk. Stick with the 700 when buying a Remington.

Saw one advertised at Walmart I believe with a scope, for $279, or in that neighborhood.

solid choice ,especially since you have a scope. Check into the 7mm.08 you may have greater choices for rounds with that caliber

Stay away for 770, 710, and DONT buy any guns from Walmart EVER. Go to BassPro or another gun shop. Look at the Model 7 or like said 700.

Saw a very good review of one last night. If I were buying a rifle, I would not eliminate them, but what Savage has been doing has me interested.

Alx, have you handled the 770?

You're probably correct that it would suffice for his stated purpose, but why not get the adl for virtually the same money and have a MUCH mote competent rifle?

I was gonna post the 770 were crap right away but I think you get the feel from other guys. I bought a used 700 adl that was about 10 years old and slay deer with it every year

Savage rifles really impress me. The accutrigger is wonderful and the one I owned was a tack driver.

Yeah, even at that price I certainly don't think I would get one.
