Bald Eagle hunting coots.

Went to Guntersville this weekend to take some pictures of some white pelicans. As my luck would have it they were all in the middle of the lake so I drove over to where one of the eagle nests is located. As luck would have it one was taking in the sun on a limb.
Was also lucky enough to see a juvenile eagle fly by with a fresh killed coot in his talons.
Bonus banded hen mallard.

You take some fine pictures. Thanks for posting them.
I’d like to have some coots to make a poule d’eau’ gumbo.
I shot a rabbit once while I was driving a tractor. When I jumped off of the tractor to retrieve rabbit an eagle swooped over and grabbed it ten feet in front of me.

We had eagles in the damned decoys just about every day in Washington State. They would, from time to time, manage to actually pick a decoy up for a foot or so. It was fun to watch but made decoying birds very difficult. We were told once by a Federal Game warden adjacent to McNary NWR that we were harassing those eagles. Seriously. We were hunting ducks in an area designated as open to duck hunting using a legal and common method of hunting ducks and apparently we were violating a federal law. He did not make a case of it so I am not certain that he was being serious but he said it...and it happened almost every time I hunted the area at some point in the day.
I got the same speech about a porpoise in the pass at St. Andrews Sound by a Florida FWS Agent. We were being checked and a porpoise came up alongside the boat and just stayed there watching the proceedings. Game warden said we had to leave the area because our being there was harassing that porpoise. Again, I do not know if he was serious or not but we did indeed leave after he finished with us. If he was it would be impossible to fish in Florida because you can't stop a boat for more than a few seconds without a damned porpoise coming alongside looking for an easy meal.

white pelicans.
My first season of duck hunting in New Mexico was my first experience on any scale with white pelicans. They were thick as fleas anywhere there was a sizeable body of water. I noticed that ducks avoided them like the plague...when they would swim toward rafting ducks the ducks and coots would get out of their way in a hurry. I asked a NM Game Warden about it at Bitter Lake NWR once and he claimed that white Pelicans would eat ducks, especially coots. Never saw one do it but I have seen huge rafts of ducks leave an area when the Pelicans started to move in among them.

Saw this happen fishing in Lake Boeuf once. Flock of coot took off for no apparent reason. Then, I saw the white flash coming down at an almost vertical angle. Smokes one in the air and flys back up. Coot spiraled down to the water like a guy caught up in a partially opened parachute. Eagle circled a couple times the swooped in a picked it up before an alligator got it.

Great pics. A few ago in front of my camp there were dozens of coots hanging around. A eagle would swoop down and they would all go under. It was like the eagle was fricking with them as he never actually grabbed one.

Had a HUGE bald eagle swoop down in pond behind house yeserday and pick a fish off the surface, I assumed it was a big shad.
Yesterday afternoon I was fishing and found two 8-9 inch crappie dead on ground near the pone. One obviously had some marks on it. One had no sign of being picked up by something with big ol talons. They were pretty fresh so I have to think it was the eagle did it, but it just left em on the ground in the wide open.

quote:yep, same thing another time. Was looking for lake runners and fishing the blinds. Saw an eagle sitting on one that was in my line. When I got to it to fish, noticed a sacalait on the platform so I got on it to check it out. Measured 12” from gill plate to tail because the head was gone. So, it had to be a 14-15” black. You dont see many that big in Lake Boeuf, but that eagle sure did.

Beautiful pictures, thanks. In the second pic he looks like he was pissed off and ready to fly right to you.

nice shots!
I saw a Cooper's Hawk at Pensacola Beach yesterday. First good pics I've taken with my new nikon coolpix p950
also saw some bufflehead ducklings the other day in Pensacola Bay.

Great shot of that Cooper's Hawk.
When I first got to the Eagle nest one of the Eagles was doing a little home improvement work. The light was not in my favor.

them sumbitches wear the ducks out down at the wax. We pulled up to the camp after a hunt once and there was an eagle plucking a gadwall on our porch

I was hoping to see a bald eagle taking down a coot. Great pictures though. Thanks for sharing.

Great shots, cotton!
4-5 years ago, we had a bald eagle nest about 2-3 miles north of our house on a pretty rural road. Me and my little girl would ride up there on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and just pull off on the side of the road and watch for 30 minutes or so. Cool creatures.
