I want a good “all around” set up for reds. What size braid for main line, what size/type of leader (if any)? Rod type/action? I hear don’t go below 20lb braid on baitcaster
TIA
TIA

30lb power pro. Medium to Medium/Heavy rod.
My redfish rod that I throw spinnerbaits and chatterbaits with has a Fishing 13 Concept A on it. 30lb drag.
The smallest size Shimano Tranx is nice too

I don’t salt water fish but I won a rod and reel that they said is for salt water but I’m going to bass fish with it. It’s a Cajun tackle house voodoo stick medium heavy rod with a Lews custom inshore reel. I'd imagine it would be pretty legit for reds.
I throw 50-65lb power pro when I’m bass fishing. Not sure why you would use less for reds.

30 lb power pro braid on a medium heavy rod would be good for all around. I use 12-15 lb flouro leaders if the water is really clean.
For weedless lures around heavy grass I use a heavy action with 50 lb braid

I mainly use a shimano curado spooled with power pro slick 50 pound braid tied to a 15 pound fluorocarbon leader with a uni-uni knot on a 7’ medium Falcon coastal rod.
I’ve caught anything from 34” red to a throwback speckled trout on it, works great IMO.

KISS, use the same equipment you would for bass fishing with 30# braid.

My Baitcast setups are as follows
Shimano SLX DC on MH-F Shimano SLX Rod
Curado DC on M-F BPS JM Carbonlite 2.0
Scorpion DC on M-F BPS JM Platinum SS
All spooled with 30lb braid, with DC reels I don't need larger line to prevent backlashes and 30lbs is big enough to stop dig ins, also I love having over 100yds of line on my spool for when hooking into big reds, blacks, or jacks. I set my flourocarbon leader size based on what I'm targeting. 12-16lbs for trout depending on water clarity, 30lbs when fishing on oysters or for big redfish, 50lbs flourocarbon when there are toothy fish in the area such as jacks, mackerel, or sharks. I will also switch over to 40lb wire if I am still betting cut off often that day due to teeth.

Fkn bass fishermen lol... my rods have 15 lb braid with 25lb mono or fluero leader with fg knot, catch trout,
reds, flounder, sheep, and I never break off... if it can break that, it's a shark or jack, and I didn't want it anyway.

30 lbs braid is the best all around line to spool up. I switched to Diawa J Braid about two years ago and I love it. I found the Power Pro was popping mid-line. It’s not made like it used to be.
In my opinion, a medium power rod is the best all around rod for Louisiana marsh fishing. I also agree with the poster above about fishing a bass setup for redfish.
I’m not a leader guy... I typically only use them when the fish are being finicky or if the water really cleans up.
Tight Lines!

What's your hate with braid? If you fish saltwater braid is basically a must with light tackle since such huge fish lurk in the same water you are targeting small species. It's lighter, thinner, casts further, doesnt backlash as bad, doesnt hold memory, has no stretch, and has more sensitivity. The only real downsides are fraying, wind knots, need for leaders and spool backing or tape.
When I'm throwing $10-15 jerkbaits for trout and a #25 redfish grabs my jerkbait you can bet your arse I'm getting my jerk bait back even if he tries to run 100yds, I can lock that drag down without fear of a break off or getting spooled.

I find shimano to provide a better product. A lot of lews, abu garcia, and Bass pro shops reels are made by Doyo in south Korea some reels even share the same parts from different brands.

I run 30# Suffix 832 with 20# fluoro leader on every setup that I have. I have reels from just about every brand but Daiwa and like them all. For rods I mainly use 6'-9" medium light with moderate tips, but I do have a 7' medium castaway skeleton that I throw sometimes as well. The medium light setups are the most common thing used on the texas coast and they are used for catching all species of inshore fish. Makes working the lure easier. Just has to be a good rod and it will handle it.
ETA: My favorite reels are Lews Tourney Pro, Lews Inshore, Shimano Scorpion, and Abu Garcia Premier. I use a few 13 Concepts also that I have no issues with and can cast a mile, but they are on rods I don't use as often as the above.

Just wrap the line over the spool 3-4 times before tying the knot. Won't slip. I promise.
You also missed one of the upsides of braid, in that you can fit WAY more line on your spool due to small diameter.

I mentioned the line was thinner, I left it to the reader to recognize that you can put more of a thinner line than a thicker line on a spool. I always use a single wrap of electrical or masking tape on my spools or I tie it through the hole if the spool allows me to, never had line slip.
