Any of you have Bahia grass in your horse pastures? Do you recommend it (particularly for North Louisiana)? Thanks in advance for your advice.

That's 95% of pastures in North LA.

My advice would be to supplement feed and you'll be okay. We don't do horses, but our cows do fine on it with mineral blocks and occasional protein tubs.

used to have to deal with it a lot. I hated topping pastures with it in it. I don't know about horses but cows would eat it unless their mouths got short.

I had a 2.5 acre plot that had large patches of bahia due to the previous owner feeding bahia grass hay to his cows.... had good luck using MSMA. MSMA will kill St. Aug, etc. but not bermuda.
I wanted the bermuda to grow and then I did a patchwork of centipede sod in areas and within a few years the centipede choked out the bermuda.

I have 2 horses, a mini horse, and 2 donkeys on it. I don't feed them anything other than trace mineral blocks and they are fine.

Cows do good on the other pastures but I keep tubs out year round.

As far as winter, just have add hay and maybe feed through tough conditions.

Keep in mind horses are very hard on grass. They tend to pull the roots up more than cattle

Bahia does excellent in sandy soil even during dry periods of summer. Iron ore or poor soil the drought hurts it. For best performance you might need to keep it clipped slightly so it will stay tender. Don't put it down if it is next to your yard unless you want to be cutting grass every 3 days.

Great in a pasture. Not in my yard.

MSM turf kills Bahia. Can use on centipede and st aug

There is a grazing restriction if you apply MSMA. I think it's one year.

To the OP, bahia will grow on a hungry hill. We had it for cattle. Hard on their teeth but grows like a mo fo.
