To be clear, I'm okay with a head on shot. Watch the video closely. The camerman is looking the bull head on. The shooter is not, he's left of the cameraman and separated by some distance. Watch the path of the arrow, from what I see the shooter is presented a quartering toward shot and at ten yards the bull is literally a few steps from presenting a broadside shot.
Again, we're splitting hairs here. Fine bull for the young man and I'm sure it was a gas..

You know I'll take my medicine when I'm wrong, I just don't like the way it tastes.

This thread is why I love the OB way better than the other boards here.
People come together, debate, disagree, teach, learn, but at all times remain respectful.
I would still say only take this shot if you KNOW you can do it and KNOW where to place the arrow.
It is not an easy shot (the target area is relatively large but the margin for error is small) but definitely a doable shot if you can consistently hit a grapefruit which if you are bow hunting you should.
The range was pretty short too. I would not take this shot outside of 15-20 yards.
Heck, who am I kidding the elk would have bolted when he smelt me shitting my pants as he was coming closer...

I dont see anything wrong in the shot. He's 10 YARDS away...If he can not hit the vitals dead on he doesnt need a bow. And being so close he's already going to have good KE to get good penetration. That said, what an awesome video!

also disagree with your initial statement, getting in bow range of an elk is not nearly as difficult as you'd think. They arent the brightest in the animal kingdom.
huh...there are authors on the subject who disagree with you. I know people who have elk hunted all their lives who would also disagree with. Seeing them in action, limited though, I would go with their opinion. There are people who go years without getting a kill. I'm talking real hunting. Not on a guided trip on private land without pressure of other hunters.

I've only hunted elk on public land, maybe I will try real hunting next time.
Authors are paid to sensationalize hunting and making it sound easy doesnt sell magazines.

Are you suggesting the shooter or camera person should speak (make noise) when an animal is 30 feet away?

you the man....should starting writing books then, since it's soooo easy.
I feel like I'm reading the ot.

I'll agree there but my friends and their friends who don't kill every year and have been doing it for 30+ years have nothing to sell.

IMHO, the key to elk hunting is physical conditioning and understanding how to negotiate mountainous terrain quickly and quietly. Being in elk rich country certainly helps. I've done archery bulls and rifle cows now. From what I've seen those that go home empty usually werent able to make it to the elk after glassing them. Its the conditioning that got them or being just too lazy to venture far from the truck. After day 2 or 3 many of those hunters have given up to cramps and blisters.
As for it being easy, I wouldnt go that far but to be sure killing a fair chase mature bull elk is a hell of a lot easier than a fair chase mature whitetail buck and I'll leave it at that. There are some hardcore elk hunters that bag big boys every year and I respect the hell out of those guys. Theres a lot of time and dedication that goes into that.

Those things are key but the overall Bull success rate with a bow is like 10%. It is still hard, those keys slant things in your favor but they are still damn hard to kill.
Now when they are in the rut things get a bit easier, but in my 30+ years of experience killing a Buck is multiple times easier than killing a bull. I hunt in very good physical condition in the some pretty good areas as well.
To call it easy is fantasy.

I am. A simple "wait", "shoot", "yes" or "no"
