I have heard some tall tales about this place. Has anyone ever been deep inside this place?

I have been thinking about it lately. I drive to and from houston weekly and have been plotting spots I'd like to fish.

I work offshore out of Venice and have thought about just taking the bull by the horns and just go exploring around there. I have heard tales of panthers and bears out there. Not sure if I would want to see either one of those while being on a kayak.

Do you really think a black bear or a panther is going to swim/wade out into the water and attack you?

I'd be more worried about the tree shaka's and moccasins

I did this many years ago with Pack and Paddle. Got caught in a horrendous thunderstorm, saw a boatload of snakes and a couple of gators. When we got back to the landing, someone had been struck by lightning. Wasn't a great day.

not on a kayak, but a friend of mine owns a bunch of land in the basin and I've been all over in boats, 4 wheeler, rangers, etc

ETA: gators aren't bad, tons of people wakeboard in the basin

There were a few people out there this past weekend in kayaks. There are a lot of boats that won't slow down for a kayak so you wouldn't catch me out there in one. Too many snakes and such out there.

Do they make a rifle mount for kayaks? Cause it would be cool to mount an AR15 for that kinda shite.

you need to take your kayaks deep inside by boat, then launch and paddle around

It's funny to see what outsiders say about the basin. That's my stomping ground. There's kayak trails that are wide open, get off the trails and might have stump problems.

I've launched many times on Bayou Sorrel and paddled to the upper flats, as well as kayak/canoe fished around Pat's bay on the other side of the levee. Saw lots of gators and snakes, caught lots of fish. Can't imagine being worried abt bears and panthers, though I'd love to see 'em. There is lots of excellent paddling in the basin, but I would not go when the water is high. You will be paddling against some strong current either out or back. With all the flooding in the mid-west, you can look for some pretty high water next month.

Did you catch a wake from Junior and Willie's new boat?

That looks fun, but I'd have to do it in the early Spring, before all the snakes, gators, mosquitoes, nats, and unbearable heat came out.

The Atchafalaya is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Your biggest threat would be from power boats coming around blind corners and running you over!

Of course if you are going to go this is a good time with the water as high as it is there is way less boat traffic right now.

Yep. No way I'd go in a kayak on the weekend. Those weekend tournament fishers with 300's on their Allisons and Bullets think they are fishing in the Bassmaster Classic.
