ole, but that earth is almost certainly not done settling.

fix the other problem first then the sinkhole may fix itself, or fill it with spoil or enviromentalists or something to raise mititgation money

Check out the blog that LSURoss linked a few pages back. I'll link it in the op.

Jester, what is your profession? Just curious as you seem to have a pretty good handle on the situation.

Looks like todays pics are showing more water on the surface. Not surprising.

This is where you definitely know more than I do. I understand the science fairly well, but I don't know anything about cost. I'm just throwing out ideas.

I'm a mechanical engineer. I've actually never worked directly with mining, but I work close enough to it to get a good understanding of it. Like I said earlier, I did destroy the curve in my low level geology classes.

The sink hole won't be fixing itself. I think we'd be better served spending our time debating names for the new lake.

I'm pretty sure that irregularity to the bottom-right corner is the hole spreading. I think the immediate hope is that it doesn't spread far enough to breach the banks of Bayou Corne or any other natural waterways in the area. That could unleash some really nasty stuff into the swamps.

For the record, I am by no means an expert on this situation. I have no direct involvement, either. I am just sharing my somewhat educated thoughts on the situation.

I am no geologist or petroleum engineer but it seems like there would be very little if anything you could do to fix a leaking salt dome.

You could at least tell the parish Emergency Preparedness director about it, which wasn't done, per the article. I hope the news media keeps digging (SWIDT?)

All the big wigs are being pretty hush hush about what's going on under the ground out there.
