Hello baws. I recently purchased a 6.5 Grendel build for my son, but I'm needing assitance on which optic and foregrip to put on. He's only 7 so keep this in mind. This build will be for deer/hogs. Below are the pieces that I currently have in my possession:

Upper

Lower

Any help would be appreciated!

ETA: This is my first build, so let me know if I'm missing anything.

I have a 6.5 Grendel upper that I have a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x. It does well on deer and hogs. Anything around that should be good.

I only have one foregrip and it's a Magpul AFG on a AR-10. I like it and no complaints.

Leupold 1.25 x4 Mark3HD. Really good scope for the money. Get the Firedot BDC.

Something to remember about optics: nothing is free. If all of these scopes are the same price
1-4
1-4 with illuminated reticle
1-8

The basic 1-4 is going to give you better optical clarity. 6x and 8x magnification is very difficult to pull off on a budget, so while you might get see two scopes that are $300 and assume the 1-8 is going to let you see more than the $300 1-4, that's not necessarily true. Typically the upper magnification ranges are going to be pretty dark and have a very small eye box and possibly not be that useable.

I'm not trying to steer you away from illuminated reticles or 8x magnification ranges, because there are some nice scopes out there that have one or both, just remember that to offer those features at a given price they're having to make it up somewhere.

For the same build, I'd be putting on a SWFA fixed 6x

What’s your budget for a scope? If you don’t mind me asking.

I’d recommend this one, Sig Sauer Sierra 6 2-12x40mm. Check out Sig regardless though, they’ve got plenty scope options

For a kid hunting, go with the Leapers UTG Bugbuster 3-12x34. It's a decent scope, not expensive, and has some range to it. If it's not for upclose tactical use, the 1x LPVOs are not going to be for that. Give him more distance.

This is a good budget optic, but be aware that the reticle is set for a specific 5.56 load and velocity. You will need some range time to determine actual ranges for each one.

A 6x multiplier and relatively small Objective lens will mean that it won't be great for any low light situations and the eyebox will be tight.

I would suggest no more than a 4x multiplier and at least a 44mm Objective lens, but 50mm would be better.

You may want to checkout the Swampfox Patriot optic in 4-16x44. This comes in either a MRAD or MOA reticle which I would prefer over a BDC. It's also FFP so the subtensions will be accurate at any magnification.

If you need more magnification, Burris makes the Fullfield IV which can be had in 4-16x50, but only an MOA reticle.

Vixen Scope

Vixen 2-8x32 its Japanese glass for $299. SWFA Ultralight would be another great option but they are on backorder. If it's mainly used for hunting don't put a foregrip on it, it'll just get in the way.
