I'm considering 7.5" or 10.5".

Mostly shooting sub 100yds.

Not real concerned about subpar ballistics. Just want a fun, short barrel plinker.

Isn’t under 8.5 too short for muzzle velocity?

I have an 8.5 suppressed. It is fun to shoot. I don't know what the muzzle velocity for the SBR is though.

Note: If you shoot with your off arm stretched out like 3-gunners or "operators", you can potentially shoot off a finger. So, put a hand grip out front for you to grip. Or run your fingers out past the muzzle break and get a permanent "shocker" hand.

Anything under 10.5” and the gun will be over gassed and ballistics will suck. 11,5” is a better length.

I was in the same position as the OP with what I wanted.

I kept reading statements like this during my research...

So your option is 10.5" minimum for 5.56.

If you want shorter like a 7.5" then you need to consider a 300 blackout. It uses the same magazines which is convenient and also dangerous. The 300 blackout ammo is more expensive than 5.56.

In the end, I decided a 10.5" 5.56 is plenty short and cheaper to shoot.

Thats got to be a head splitter without a can. The 16" AR I had was rough with ear plugs.

I have a 7.5", 10.3", and 12.5".

Haven't shot the 7.5" pistol in ages, the 10.3" with a can is my nightstand gun, and the 12.5" is my favorite to shoot although I need to upgrade the glass.

If you go with 10.5" or shorter and don't have a can, I'd recommend something like the Noveske KX3, KAK Flash Can, or VG6 muzzle device with their CAGE thing.

Also, unless you are just committed to it being 5.56, I'd look at a 9mm AR. You can get silly short with those, is great for < 100m, and is cheaper to feed. I cannot recommend Macon Armory enough for a 9mm AR, and I've screwed around with USA Gun Bunker's Truck Yeeter (side charger 8.5" 9mm AR) and it is fun and reliable.

10.3 here. Very handy, very cool, and very loud. Indoors is a no go without a can. With a can it’s about perfect imho. But, yes the 11.5 is better ballistic wise and just about as handy. So either is gtg in my book.

But to be honest, I put a can on my 14.5 and find myself using it almost exclusively. Recoil almost non existent, no real blow back, and can be shot w/o ear pro for a bit. Try that with the 10.3 and you’ll feel like artillery is going off next to your ear after 5 min of shooting.

Been reading too much negative press about short bbl being too loud indoors have me reconsidering now.

I'll just live with my 16" bbl AR.

A short 9mm AR is going to be a tad quieter than a 9mm handgun indoors.

16" is still too short for 5.56 IMO. Less than 20" should be a .300 blackout.

I had/have a Sulzer 16" and while it was/is/might have been cool, it was/is loud AF. Carbine or rifle would be all I would buy if I were to ever consider buying another evil gun.

There is nothing fun about shooting short barreled 5.56 unless you really like deafening fireballs.
