Anyone ever troll live/artificial baits across passes between the barrier islands?

Specifically for bull reds, and jacks. If so, is it worth doing? Or are you better off looking for pogie schools or birds?

In my own anecdotal experience, cracked crab in the passes will result in drum... Red and Black... especially between sunset and night
I've drug cutbait (usually ladyfish) across the bottom, close to passes and have caught Crabs, Bulls, Cats and Sharks
Never tried trolling artificials tho

Yes. I load up my yak in my flats boats and tow it behind my express. Sometimes the express is too fast for trolling.

I’ve caught tons of mahi trolling the passes in my express boat

I have always wondered how well an alabama rig would work being trolled in saltwater. How often does it get hit by small trout? I feel like the trout would be constantly on the rig instead of the big game fish.

Sure. People have been doing it forever in Mississippi. Generally they troll big spoons and catch reds, jacks, and mackerel in the summer months.

Sure, I always go way the hell out in my aluminum bass boat to catch stuff I'm not gonna eat.

Not a huge fish eater. My freezer is full, no need to harvest fish atm. If I catch keepers I will keep a few of them in the live well to give them away, if no one wants them I release them or call a family member to see if they want them.
It's surprising how bad some people are at fishing, some people that have spent their entire life on the water couldn't jig a swimbait to save their life. Live shrimp are good for catfish and school trout. Or why are you using a poling cork in 10-20' of water?
