With all the badass epoxies they make these days and the fact it's on the side of the boat rather than the bottom, you'll have more water leaking into the boat from other places than from that patch. Good job pops.

I suck at welding. But I have had a ton of experience working around welders and ironworkers.

There is an art to aluminum welding. If you try to “make do” without having the right equipment and experience, you will not be pleased with your results.

I’m as DIY as they come, but I wouldn’t attempt this.

I've done some reinforcing of my 14ft flat's transom by using a 110V Lincoln MIG 135 without a spool gun. Was not easy but it worked. I used 100% Argon, a Teflon liner in the whip while keeping it straight as possible. I also did some more and borrowed a friend's Hobart MIG with a spool gun. Much easier but fought with the wind outside blowing my shielding gas off the bead.

Way to make due.

FWiw, the low end spool guns are pretty affordable and work fine for light work. Having a 20 foot whip is nice.

That's the same stuff I was talking about in my post.

I have an extendable aluminum post that my lowrance is mounted to up on the bow of my boat; it is welded together with Alumiweld rods. I had an unopened, unused pack that had been sitting for over a year and decided to try em out on that project.

To date, after hundreds of fishing trips, after crossing hundreds of miles of choppy water and thousands of miles of jagged roads that are commonplace nowadays, the weld has never failed.
