I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm drawing up some halfassed contract

When you say "drawing up a set of terms", that sounds like you're drawing up a contract, not ironing out the details via email. My 2 cents.

We almost bought a place there. Good area, you should see plenty of deer.

Fair enough. We're ironing out the details via email which I hope to get a "thats correct" or a "yes, that is accurate" from the guy.

I always hate seeing these threads. Way too many horror stories out there. Makes a guy very very leery of booking any kind of hunt. There's some real jacklegs out there that just wanna separate us from our money

I won't book a place that someone I know personally hasn't been

"Dearest Sir,

I pray this letter finds you alive and well. I wanted to inquire as to your arse wiping policy. Will baby wipes be used exclusively as my tender arse tends to chap in colder circumstances. Also, after completion of wipe, will it also be your responsibility to dispose of the renderings from my bottom?

Greatest regards,

TheGreat318"

If he's got an arse wiping policy, then I'm all ears.

There are enough resources out there to find reputable guides. I'd never book any kind of trip without finding online reviews or personal references.

I agree, if your trying to contract out with an individual on private land, be careful.

I'm just messing with you. Like Yellowfin said, I'm leary of a place unless someone I personally know has been there.

Even then it's a chance deal, especially with ducks. But deer too, it could rain all weekend or just end up being 80 degrees.

You won't know if you don't go...

you know there to be deer on the property and can assure at least a shot opportunity

Dude if he takes you to a deer stand in the woods he's done his part. Don't matter whether he's scouted, planted food plots, or doesn't have a clue if a deer has ever passed within 300 yards of that stand.

You're right that you get an "opportunity." That word can be interpreted very broadly.

I had a guide lie to the outfitter about how much we paid him. It made me and my brother look like crap to my friend that set the trip up until I told him we paid exactly what he told us to pay plus tip.

How would this offer any kind of protection at all? Seriously? If he is a scammer then this is useless. Searching the internet for reviews of past performance would be a much better use of your time.

Its supposed to be near some place called Tilden, TX. They have some big deer there. The guide sent me a picture of a big deer somebody killed out there two weeks ago. It was a mainframe 9 with a bunch of stickers and one drop tine. I'm gonna say it grossed mid 150s.

I hunt this area regularly (a little closer to Whitsett). The ranch I hunt has a 3 1/2+yr old 135" or less cull rule. I routinely see 150-170" deer on the place, but those once they're 6 1/2 or older are saved for owners family.

I have been on a hell of a lot of guided hunting and fishing trips and can tell you that I have never been on one that I would consider a scam...anyone that is not legit won't be in business long at all...

you need to understand that you are paying the guide for his hunting skills and to organize your trip for you...not to do anything like garantee that you kill something...sometimes you do well, sometimes not...my only expectation is that they do what is reasonable for them to do and that if conditions are such that the chance of success is remote, they be up front about that and give me the option to postpone my trip...

hunting/fishing on public land with guides is extremely common out west since there is so much public land...so this should not be a problem for you, IMO....

Doing this oilfield thing. My office is 10 miles outside of San Diego, pretty much everyone I work with is from San Diego. For such a small town they sure do pop out some oilfield trash.....
