I'll be moving to Jackson in a few months and would like to start fishing the reservoir. I'll be fishing out of a kayak for the immediate future. Any tips?

TIA

The new Ross Barnett Reservoir trash law for boats went into effect January 1st, 2019.

The law requires all boaters and fisherman to have a designated trash container on the boat. Anyone who does not follow this law can be fined up to $1,000.

By container, the proposal includes the language, "a container marked 'Thrash' with stencil or other clear markings for the disposal of garbage or refuse."

The Reservoir Police Department replied to a comment on Facebook and said: “We do not dictate which container you must use. It must however be labeled as ‘trash’. It cannot be a small ultra thin grocery store bag.”

Boaters are already required to have a trash container, and the new proposal would cover “any person, firm, or corporation fishing from the shore or bank of the Main Lake or any dyke, levy, groin, jetty or more appurtenant to the waters within the Reservoir Project Area.”

“What it does is give enforcement officers a more enforceable law regarding litter on the banks. As it stands now, an officer must see the person drop the trash and then leave, which could be hours later. Once this law is in effect, the officer will have a tool to help stop littering - if you’re fishing and do not have a container, you could be ticketed.”

I live about 10 minutes from the hwy 43 boat launch and fish regularly. With a yak, I’d suggest getting familiar with the pearl river up north or the pelahatchie bay backwaters down south.

Main lake is rough in a yak.

Also get used to seeing lots of gators and big ones.

The BASS Elite series has fished there a couple times within the last few yrs. I’d start by looking up results and baits used there. I know it was winded as heck last time they were out there. Looks like the wind is a factor to consider out there. I’ve nvr been out tho

Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

It will be a learning experience for me. Plenty of inshore experience, no freshwater experience.

Also, what’s the bowfishing scene like?

You need to fish pearl river in kayak... Like the guy said.. He knows what he's talking about. Just based on my experience in the area

Early spring/spawn, fish shallow like anywhere else. There’s lots of buggy whips and wood cover on the banks. The pads won’t be out yet but spring is still a time to get bit.

One bad thing about spring is the lake gets HAMMERED with pressure. FLW, BASS, Media Bass, college, high school, catch a dream, etc. will have a 150+ boat tournament on that lake pretty much every weekend from February till May.

Summer pattern is pretty much only a couple of Baits. Frogs and punching in pads and grass. Then deep cranking, deep drop shot, c-rig, etc. on brush piles in the river when it gets real hot.

Punching on the Rez is gonnabe tough in a yak. It’s a very vertical presentation with heavy weights and braid when the stuff gets thick.

Fall is also fun on the Rez. The pressure goes way down when deer season starts. Frogging the dying pads gets good in the fall. Also fishing the laydowns on the pearl river is good in the fall. Flukes, spinner Baits, jigs, Jerk Baits, etc.

I’m not really a winter fisherman so not much I can say there.

1. Stay close to the bank, the worst boat operators in the world call the Rez home.
2. Pelahatchie Bay is closed, once it reopens (hopefully by the end of May), that is prime kayak territory (and up Pelahatchie Creek).

So you can literally be ticketed for littering even if you are NOT LITTERING? That is complete bullshite! They can (and absolutely 100% will) make you pay them for a crime you never committed. How do rational adults support this??

They’ve seen the embarrassing amounts of trash on our roads and public waterways. Spare me the grandstanding like it’s some attack on your civil liberties. If it keeps trashy fricks from being trashy fricks then I’m all for it.

Does a compartment in a bass boat qualify as a trash bin?

Yes, it’s the same law that’s been on the books for years. You just have to demonstrate you have a place to put trash that’s not a grocery bag or the floor of the boat where it can blow out. The difference is it now applies to bank fishermen, so they need a bucket with trash written on it. For the group this is targeted at, finding a bucket won’t be a problem.

Agreed. Go to any respectable waterway in the US and they have something like this in place. If only people could clean up after themselves we wouldn't need a babysitter.
