Do tarpon still pop up in Lake P? I thought that would have ended with the Levee locks and daming of MRGO

The absolutely still have tarpon show up in Lake P during the summer months. In fact every year I feel like Todd Masson or some local outdoors guy does another story on people seeing and catching them in the lake.

Lake should start loading up with jack crevalle soon too.

Tarpon have been in the Lake well before the MRGO so yes they are definitely in the Lake.

Glad to hear. I would run into some every now and then on the MS coast and islands/marshes south

state record that stood for many years came from Lake P..... and it was caught before the MRGO was opened....

they still show up.....and in numbers too.. contrary to what some mis informed people think/claim - they do not go inshore to spawn.... saw a really healthy one free jump in lake borgne last year. they are not in the "holes" people used to refer to.... and even back then they weren't in "deep" holes.. they were near those areas because of bait... august and sept.. is when they start showing up though... tropical system comes near our area game over.. they usually don't make it back inshore after that... they retreat to deeper water when storms come.. back when gill nets were still legal - we saw one near martellos castle in a gill net dead that was easy 180 lbs. I think there are more tarpon in the lake p basin than there are now than at any time since the early 70s.... just significantly fewer people fishing for them.

I bet a large live mullet free lined on a circle hook is money if you can locate schools.

Choup where do you fish for them in the Lake? By the holes or the bridges?

We love our mullet schools down around St Pete also. We have much better luck with Ladyfish as bait than mullet when it comes to Tarpon.

the holes are long gone....

bet bets always have been places where depth changes and current lines meet.... I have only seen two west of sea brook.. all on eastern side of lake.

How successful are the guides? What type of shot do you have if you hire someone around here?

Chouest and Barkhurst are very successful in gulf once they get here in good numbers....

in Lake P - I am not aware of any guides... One of the few still chasing them there keeps where he catches them and how many a pretty good secret.(he has not caught any yet this year)

Fished with coon a few times. He is the go to guy for tarpon fishing out of Grand Isle. He may be the only one who does it full time for the season.

BTW dont expect a fancy boat or reels but you will have the best chance for catching a tarpon.

How much are the trips? A tarpon is number one on my bucket list of fish to catch in the immediate future
