I think you’re looking too deep into this “rut” and trying to pinpoint dates. The rut in southwest MS is more of a trickle rut meaning 1 day a doe will come into heat and have 4 bucks chasing her, 8 days later another doe will come into heat then 6 days later another doe comes into heat.
The “rut” in MS last probably over a month or more starting around Christmas and ending late January and into February.
Be in the woods when you can and hope a hot doe comes by with a “shooter” buck for you.

I think the drought played a huge role. The following year we were seeing spotted fawns deep in November which is unheard of in our area.
I’ve seen more change post drought than any thing else…Just my opinion

Northern Adams County and northern Concordia Parish.
Saw 4 rack bucks behind a doe last night locking the front gate at 730. Good to see but still getting plenty of slow reports from hunters. Most trail cam pics of bucks is middle of the night close to thickets.

Agreed but most guys on here on have a few days to pick to hunt around work so they give it their best effort. When we used to run pay hunts, we had guys calling in the summer asking same questions. We always told them 2 weeks around New Years and best when the moon is new/full.
Best answer is hunt the highest Barometer days usually after a cold front. I am convinced that the Barometer moves deer more than anything.

I can agree with this. I hunted yesterday evening and this morning. Both hunts I saw doe's still with yearlings...obviously nothing chasing. Maybe I wasnt lucky..but I do think there are a few hot doe's out there.

Global warming or whatever you want to call this weather pattern has seriously screwed up the S Mississippi Rut

Walked out the door at 4:00 for work and see this 40yds from my front door. I'd say it's on in Wilkinson County.

Saturday I killed a mature 8 point that was chasing. Shot him at 11:30 in the morning. He was about 20 minutes behind the doe but gave up the wind and rushed into the micro food plot like an 18 year old on his first date. This was in Lincoln county.

My neighbor had a mature 8-point on camera at 4:45 Saturday afternoon. I had a small buck walk in on 2 doe in a foodplot this weekend but he was only interested in eating.

I had 2 doe and 2 bucks in a food plot together yesterday evening just eating away.

We saw a small 8, a doe and a spike yesterday afternoon. They were moving but not chasing .

In between McComb and Liberty. I always just say Summit because that is what the weather app says I'm at.

You’re in Thompson. The locals will correct you haha.

Ok. So out of curiosity what’s the OBs opinion on seeing does and bucks feeding together at this time of the year. Rut hasn’t started or is the rut over?
Posted on 1/14/25 at 5:38 pm to lsushelly
May be between the primary rut and secondary rut?

I would probably agree with this. Typically we’re Christmas to January 10th where it’s really good. This year it seemed more like the week before Christmas when we had the first nice cold front. We shot 7, 8, & 2 9’s in a 7-10 day window.
I was reading somewhere that usually 10% of the doe go in heat, then 80%, then the remaining 10%. This is usually over a 3-4 week period.

It is later and later now.....and not near as intense as it once was.
Christmas week is no longer the time....bummer.
