I was intrigued by the concept a while back and bought myself one of the Ruger scout rifles in 308. After using it for a while it's become my go-to long gun for pretty much anything from pest control to range day. I liked it so much I bought a 5.56 version so I could practice for cheaper (so much for that ). Now contemplating taking the 270 rifle class at Gunsite Academy. Any fellow scouts on the OB?

ruger scout is a fantastic all purpose rifle (which is what it was designed to be). I don’t have one but I converted my mini 30 to a scout set up and that’s also the best set up to scope an SKS or AK

The eye relief seems off to me.

Low power long eye relief scopes are part of the scout concept. The one above is a 2.5x Leupold. It allows for extremely fast target acquisition and both eyes open when shooting. Downside is low light performance. Also attaches with QD rings and can be removed to use backup iron sights if something breaks.

Gotcha. I like that you have iron sights.

I'm looking for rifles with irons and almost none of them seem to come with them.

I want to have a peep/ghost ring set up. It's always been a really classy look for me.

Picked up a French MAS 36 for the first time the other day and it had a nice short length of pull and a nice ghost ring rear sight

After shooting mostly milsurps for years, good iron sights are a dealbreaker. I’m not even putting an optic on the 5.56.

Unfortunately very few bolt guns are manufactured with them anymore.

Picked up a stainless Ruger GSR several years ago along with a few spare Ruger and AICS magazines. Mine really like 175gr+ loads.

That’s right - yours is the 18” if memory serves, right? Mine thankfully isn’t too picky - actually shot a couple 3-shot ragged holes last week with standard Federal 149 gr. 7.62.

That is why I chose my Savage Hog Hunter when I got my last bolt gun. It had adjustable iron sights on it.

Bought a sporterized, Savage made Enfield Mk4 that was meant to be turned into a fake Mk5 jungle carbine. Went scout rifle with it instead, but great Lord at the muzzle jump on that .303 with an 18 inch barrel. Gotta get a brake made for it.

I had my Mini 14 set up scout style but my aging eyes needed some magnification so I went with a 3x prism, and a forward mounted red dot scout style.

Whoops misread. The red dot is on a 45 degree offset mount. This pic shows it a little better.

Love scout rifles, dislike the .308 and having a hard time finding any at this time that are not.

That’s a sweet rifle - I can definitely see why the Canadian Rangers went that route. Bit weighty for a scout but a great rig.
