Of course it isn’t flooded with people during bow season during the week when you hunt. It’s doe only until 10/16 and they don’t rut until Christmas. Ain’t no one killing themselves for a buck out there in October.

Ok.

Fact is, just like any public land, if you have the means to get away from the office during the week, you have a chance because you can get away from people.

Yeah, if you wait until gun season, you're going to have people all over you. But that's no different than any other area in this state. I don't even go in there then.

Are the gun hunts lottery style out there? I don’t rifle hunt much anymore but definitely don’t want to be tromping through that wma when people are rifle hunting.

Hunted more last year than any season before in my life. Enjoyed every climb and scout. Put red meat in the freezer, too. Shared plenty with friends as well :)

look out for small copper heads in the palmettos. Yes I have seen some in the palmettos about 2-3 feet above the ground.

I hunted Thistlewaite a lot in the mid 90's. Early bow season seen lots of small copper heads. I hunted areas where the palmetto canopy was 4-5 feet above the ground. From my tree stand I could see deer and pigs walking beneath the palmettos.

My dad used to own a few acres that butted up to that area, but I never hunted that slough specifically.

The past decade or so I’ve hunted Tensas NWR, Fina and Little Fork; Fort Necessity; Ruston; and private land south of Delhi.

I’ve moved to the Opelousas area recently, so if I can cut down on some driving then I will hunt down south.

right now it's dry AF and you can walk around and scout pretty much all of TW. With 95 plus degree temps, snakes, mosquitos, deer flies, and no-see-ums will be unbearable. If we get a Hurricane or several fronts that drop 8" ~ 10"+ per month over August-September-October, you will have wood ducks swimming under your stand.

If someone wants better odds at putting meat on the table, Sherburne and Indian Bayou is where I'd go. Easier to hunt and some oak flats are wide open for visibility. TW is just crazy THICK and hard hunting. If you were to shoot a 250 lbs deer in TW, you might die of a heart attack trying to get him out.

Been hunting TW during the week for the past 4 years and I’ve enjoyed the hell out of it. 20min from my house and have my spots set up. There’s no more guarantee in hunting in this state than going into TW and shooting a hog. Makes it fun. Don’t kill a deer every hunt but do have success. But will say it
Takes a lot of work

Shooting hogs is reason enough to go out there.

My neighbor makes a few squirrel hunts there. We’re planning on making a couple trips to shoot a few.

Thistlethwaite WMA

There's probably a state record walking around in there right now but you won't be able to see him.
