I don't even know anybody who has one.
How do they compare to a .22mag?
I would like to check 1 out.

Just reading a little about it, it fills that gap between .22wmr and .223 and is quieter to shoot than the .223. Might be the perfect hog gun?

Might get myself a Savage in .22 hornet for Christmas. might as well be the first on my block to have one.

Dilly Dilly.

Disclaimer: I don't have 22 Hornet, but I've read a lot about it. The main drawbacks re: the 22 Hornet commonly seen are: accuracy problems; problems w/ availability of factory ammo/brass. An improved version was developed, 22 K-Hornet, to deal w/ some of the deficiencies of the regular Hornet. Using bullets of the same weight, the Hornet will better the 22 Mag by about 400 fps. Hornet ammo will be more expensive.

Another option would be the 221 Remington Fireball. The Fireball is a little more powerful than is the Hornet. I have 2 guns in 221 Remington Fireball: a 12" Contender barrel and a Stevens Model 200 w/ a McGowen custom barrel. Both guns are very accurate and highly efficient. The 221 has minimal recoil and muzzle blast. In the rifle I get 3400 fps w/ a 40 gr bullet using about 2/3 of the amount of powder a 223 would use. In my opinion, the 22 Hornet, K-Hornet and Fireball are better suited for the bandleader.

For the non-handloader another consideration would be the 17 WSM, basically the 17 HMR on steroids.

Yeah, the Ruger 77/22 in 22 Hornet is a neat looking gun.

That ruger .204 might be the better choice.

The 22 Hornet uses a bottleneck case (i.e. 30-30) that was designed 100 years ago. Accuracy is "fair" due to the poor ballistic coefficient of bullets used. I'd limit coyote or pig shots to 125 yds.

If the Hornet interests you, I'd seriously consider the 17 Hornady Hornet or a 17 Ackley Hornet. Straight wall case with a 25 or 40 degree (Ackley) shoulder angle which results in a super accurate cartridge. Easily a 1/4" ~ 1/2" 3-shot group at 100 yds rifle. You can reload 11.5 grs of powder under a 20 to 25 gr bullets at 3750 fps. This cartridge is capable of 250-300 yds for varmints, pigs, and coyotes. I built a custom 17 Ackley Hornet (pictured below) 15 yrs ago and it's probably my most favorite rifle to shoot.

17 Hnt vs. parent case on right (22HNT)

The 204 is a fine gun, but it's in a completely different category than the 22 H.

I have one in a Ruger 77/22. Extremely accurate using American Eagle and Hornady ammo. Never had trouble finding ammo, usually Academy, Cabellas and on line. Very reloadable. Crows, coyotes and pigs. You won't regret it.
