Besides the specific ammo needed, any big holdups on getting one?

No, a fine weapon and as Ganeral Patton put it

“In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”

Just get a gas plug and run whatever you want. Garand specific loads are kinda like light loads that mimic loads of the time the gun was made so they don't bend the op rod. The plug is cheap and you can run modern factory loads through it.

I got the plug from CMP and still had issues with regular 30-06 rounds. I bought a bunch of the greek stuff from CMP and have no problems with it.

I have one. Good shooter and really heavy. I was fortunate enough to buy Lake City ammo target grade back in the 80s. Still sitting on round 400 rounds.

That's what I was about to ask. Looked and there a few different types of plugs. There's a high volume and an adjustable gas plug

Other than being heavy as crap, it's a terrific firearm. Try to use a muzzle wear gauge and a throat erosion gauge to make sure you get a good shooter. I was able to buy 2 at the Port Clinton, Ohio North CMP Store and 3 at the Anniston, Alabama South CMP Store. I also was able to buy the Lake City 30-.06 ammo as well.

You will have a great time with it.

If you are a reloader, there are safe loads listed for the M1 Garand.

I know a guy that builds them as a hobby. They are sexy as hell. I really need one in my life.

I use the PPU M1 Garand specific ammo and it works well. It's also the cheapest brass case 30-06 ammo I've found. I may still get the adjustable gas plug at some point so I can run hotter ammo for hunting but for now I'm happy with the PPU Garand loads and the stock gas plug.

Get a 1903A3 as a companion gun also. Accurate, and will kick the snot out of you.

Got one on Gunbroker.com, it was a CMP resell.

Did plenty of research on new gas plugs before I bought one. Runs commercial ammo with no problem.

Great gun.

This.

Also, be prepared to clean any CMP Garand when you get it. They'll arrive coated with cosmoline (this is a good thing), but you have to get it off the stock and off the metal components. Cleaning it is a good way to learn to detail strip the weapon.

BTW -- CMP will ship directly to your home (in a hard shell plastic case). No need for the transfer to go through an FFL.

I really don't suggest getting an adjustable gas plug, it's a bandaid and not a true substitute to running the proper ammo. Federal and Hornady produce M1 Garand specific loads and the CMP has a deal with S&B to produce a copy of the M2 ball spec for them. Greek HXP is steel jacketed too, I don't run it in my Garand. I got into reloading when I picked up my Garand too, easy to get load data for. My other piece of advice is drive to the sales office in Alabama to buy a Garand from CMP. Handle the rifles and choose your own but don't put too much weight on the gauge measurements, factory new Garands could have gauge numbers all over the place and still pass accuracy requirements. Read up on the proof marks too, Garands are loaded with them and can tell you important things about the rifle.
