Ive been interested in getting a horse lately. Growing up my grandmother always had horses and I was around them but not involved much as I was a young child. Id like to get me one to ride on my property. I just dont much about which breed of horse to buy and maintenance. I know you have to maintain there hooves, but not sure how often. I have someone bail hay on my property so hay is not a problem. I know you will have to feed them sweet feed and stuff also.

what about shots and stuff like that?

someone offered to sell me a 8 year old thoroughbred with a saddle and some other stuff, for 300... which doesnt sound bad. It hasnt been ridden in a year, which kind of scares me!

any advice would be helpful.

NOOOOOOO

Not the way to go if you just want a horse to ride around. Get you a good saddle broke quarter horse. They aren't hard to come by.

Horses are hell on pasture also. You'll need a good bit of grass to keep up with it, otherwise you will have a fenced in dirt patch.

You'll have to pay somebody to come shoe it every now and then or trim it's feet if you leave it barefoot.

Not sure about shots and shite. I wouldn't think they require much medical attention without injury.

That's all I got for ya right now. Good luck

If you have pasture and room, they're not much more care than a dog. Just a lot bigger. One of my horses as a kid was an ex-race horse thoroughbred. Sumbitch could blister down a turnrow at about 40 mph. Twas awesome.

two words:

PREPURCHASE EXAM

Dont buy a horse without one. Annual vaccinations, Coggins test will run you about $100.00. Dental work (every year or two) another $100.00. hay runs $5 to $8 per bail. Feed runs $12.00 to $20 per bag. Shavings if you stall him are $5-$7 per bag (avg. 2-3 bags per stall). You need about 2-3 acres of pasture per horse.
Look long and hard before you get a horse. as for someone wanting to "give you a horse", be wary of that shite. If the horse is decent he SHOULDN'T be free.

You can shoot off the back of any horse once.

About a 90% chance you'll lose that itch a year after scratching it. Meanwhile, you'll have dumped a ton of $$, rearranged your property, and tied yourself down 7 days / week.

Better make SURE you want one before taking the plunge! Experience (mine and quite a few others) speaking...

When you jump on the back of a thoroughbred, you better be ready to ride. Horses are a Pain the azz to me.
