Another snake ID thread ---- no pics

The wife saw a snake in the backyard today when she let the dog out ..... Dark gray and she said she said it was shiny and could not see scales .... About 4 feet long .... I went out to investigate but it had hauled it no shoulder arse out ....Any ideas of the species?

Copperhead comes to mind. Up here there more pronounced in the copper patterns.
Down there Ive seen mottled grey.

Sounds like a racer variety, non-venomous

Was it fat or skinny? My first guess is a racer if skinny.
