I got raped on a AK underfolder. Paid around $700 and could buy the same one for around $450-500 right now
Supply and demand for ya.

le carbine for $799 is probably the best deal on an AR right now, UNLESS you want to build.

I am just starting my collection and I really want an AR and this has been a great thread for a newbie. I was leaning toward a .308 model but might start with the .223 instead.

I would most def. start with a 5.56 gun and not .308. Ammo is cheaper and so are magazines. Get a H&K 91 clone if you want a black gun in .308

Yeah I really bought into the they are going to take our guns mantra. Still may though.... Bought the last AK to be found in Houma. Also bought a master piece arms MPA-10 semi mac 10 in .45acp

I did the same but I didnt panic. I got my Yugoslavian M70 underfolder for $500. Probably pay close to
$650 for one now.
I want to pull the trigger (pardon the pun) on an AR platform but just cant justify it to the wife just yet.
Made the mistake of telling her that the AK was better suited for an urban environment and that I would never really need an AR.

I'm gonna save myself 1k and build a 5.56 as suggested, which shoots 5.56 and 223.

I started on an AR platform last night. I bought the stripped lower and parts and got it put together.
I was kindof amazed at just how easy it was.
There are how to videos on www.brownells.com

do not do what Propagandalf said. he may run one of those web sites....
Naw just kidding. There was some good advice in there but the best way to save money on this stuff is to pretty much piece together your own. there are youtube videos on how to attach two halves with 2 simple pins. it aint that hard. find people who have them and look at them and shoot them if you can. feel how much they weigh. if it has a sling wear it for a while in if in 10 minuets it dosent hurt your shoulder it may be light enough or have an awesome sling...lol...you can have a very nice pretty custom gun for under 1500.00 bucks. stag makes awesome firearms for less money, but dont have much "flair" and can be made lighter with a few different parts.
I say go with a Stag gas pistion rifle with a low profile gas block and throw on what ever rail you like, and a magpul stock.
I prefer a long rail on my systems. I wear shorts alot of the year and shoot in them. I have burned my legs with the barrel before. On a 16" barrel i have a 13" troy trx extreme rail that is NOT a quad rail and pretty light.
THe quad rails are heavy and over rated. so are bull barrels. IMO.

What worries me is that the lame-duck congress after the November mid-term elections will try and cram some legislation down our collective throats.

You know it. Those arse clowns in D.C. scare the hell out of me. At least the Supreme Court has been ruling in favor of gun owners lately.

The front pivot pin gave the blues on my first build.
