It is astonishing how much better Turkey hunters are today at killing Turkeys than they were in the 70's and 80's... Back in the day we hunted turkeys as a excuse to get out of the house but not go fishing.....and the attention to hiding is unbeleivable...we would wear shorts and T-shirts back in the day

Yeah I think that's because many of us view getting into the woods not so much as the woods but "not the house" whereas there is a younger demographic that views anything with guns as trying to imitate a videogame, where you kill a lot. the whole instant gratifications thing.

I'd be almost as happy in the woods with a beer and a big stick as a gun. I'm more of an outside dog.

I wish it was outlawed here To me, there are turkeys that aren’t supposed to be killed especially early season That old Tom that flies to the middle of the field and struts all day with his harem loses his mind when he sees a fan and is now very killable

You aren't wrong about the first part. Push the season back. But I don't go 45 days straight every year with 3-4 hrs sleep per night to not kill him. I'll do whatever necessary.

Disclaimer: Fanned one turkey in my life. He was in a pasture I didn't have access to. Crawled 1/4 mile across one I did have access on behind a fan to where he could see me. Shot him about 3 steps after he came under the fence.

I agree completely. When I was younger I measured success out of doors by number of birds killed or fish caught...and was most often unimpressed LOL. I have evolved to the point where it is all about getting out of the house and I am just as happy soaking night crawlers for bream as I am dragging 14 lines behind a boat....I shot a true triple on Blue Wing Teal 3 years ago next month....it was pure luck LOL....even my lab was astonished and told everyone at the bar later that evening it was the most improbable thing she had ever witnessed and was pretty good evidence of the existence of a supreme being...she is impertinient that way...but that hunt is one of the most memorable hunts I have even been on and those 3 birds were the only three that came close to the spread.....but it was perfection from start to finish.....it is all about attitude and perception.

Or that a turkey coming to a fan is wrong but one coming to rattling horns is not.

Well the numbers have been steadily declining in Alabama, and also other states. The deer population is a different story. Also, the breeding cycles of turkeys works completely differently than deer.

If there is a shortage of Turkeys then limit the harvest is all I’m saying. I would be willing to bet that more turkeys are now killed by the extended ranges of shot and choke tubes than fans.
Im just not for using regulations to control harvest is all. It would be like saying fishermen are doing to well catching what we say they can catch let’s make everyone use cane poles and crickets for bait,, anything else is illegal!!

Btw I have never used one and prolly won’t and don’t even hunt in Alabama!!

I think the hogs have more to do with the turkey decline than anything.

This is the case on our land in Boligee, AL. We didn't really start getting hogs bad until around 2010, and coincidentally that's when turkey numbers seemed to start falling off. We're on the Tombigbee, so flooding the last couple of years has hurt our numbers as well

If it was the intent to lower success rates then why didn’t they lower the limit from 5

Hogs, crows, coons, skunks, possums, everything eats eggs.

Also, all those things get really fat and healthy during deer season eating corn by the sack put out by deer hunters

Are decoys allowed in ALabama? I wanna say no? It would make some sense if decoys are not allowed to also not allow fans, which are basically a sort of decoy.

If a decoy is allowed, a strutting tom decoy, then this makes 0 sense.

Go back to hunting in shorts and T shirts

Still do in West Texas on those hot arse afternoons, wearing Sandals.
Have gotten many that way too. Just check the Cedar for Rattlers and if clear, find a cubby hole and wait.

The damned Turkey doesn't care what the frick you are wearing as long as it's not bright colors like coming from a NOLA Rainbow Pride Parade.

ETA - I have never tried Fanning in Texas. Never heard of it till tonight but makes sense.
Old Timer's here in SW LA talk of walking up on Bodies of Geese behind the cut out of a cow. I have never done it nor seen it done, but it also makes sense.
