Just got back from a trip where I saw a lot of bucks and even watched one snort-weeze a few times. No true shooters. How old do you guys think this one is?

4.5+, but I’m in the camp that believes there’s no way to tell +/- a year. Looks mature to me and I would shoot, broken side not withstanding.

He’s mature. I would guess 4 1/2. But I probably wouldn’t shoot just because of the broke rack and I would hope and pray he makes it to next year. But wouldn’t be mad if someone decides to pop him.

In the moment, there was just things about him that said old to me. I didn't want the rack or the meat, so it was an easy decision to pass. The rule there is 5.5 minimum.

It’s hard to age a buck between 4.5 and 5.5 unless you have pictures from years past. That is why I try to keep as many pictures of bucks as I can from year to year

He’s been rubbing his back with this horn(s). Very common to see patches missing on them this time of year.

My answer will depend on where this was.

If in the south, my gut says he is 5 years old.

I could definitely see it. Having now run cams consistently on the same property for several years, I can appreciate that bucks are going to vary in appearance like any of us, and that aging on the hoof is mostly a crap shoot. The 5.5 rule probably succeeds in what it was put in place to do, make guys stop and think before blasting a good looking two year old.

He looks old and stubborn... the scars on his back, the way he's stomping like his feet hurt, almost looks like he's got love handles, and his tarsals are black but streaking down his leg like he's got prostate problems, or he's not drinking enough water and too much coffee.

When you get used to aging them at trail camera level, they look a little different from the stand, especially close, I'd say he's 4.5 minimum, but I'd lean older.

I looked into his eyes. He had lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes.

That could be younger than 4.5 then, this new generation that grew up on protein, Nate's Buck Bait, and Mo'Bucks, knowing you're getting a nickname, and you're safe until you become geriatric, not being run by dogs, they're just softer.

That’s all fine and dandy……..til he bites ya. Then those black eyes roll over to white, the sea turns to red. You get that terrible high pitched screaming and they tear you to pieces.

5.5 and he just got his azz kicked. It depends on your location. In the midwest, maybe 4.5, or even 3.5, in south Louisiana, maybe 6.5. If you're feeding protein, year round, or if you're close to an established agriculture operation, corn or soybeans, he could be 4.5., or even 3.5. if you're a horn hunter, it's a cull for sure.
