My FIL gave my son his Abu Garcia Black Max reel. Really nice for a 12 yo. It’s probably a few years old and needed new line. We changed the line but as you reel it in it gets harder and harder to reel. Kinda of grinds. But with no line it’s real smooth feeling. Any thoughts on what might be the problem? Any way to clean it and if so what type of spray should I use?

Dude, it's a $30 reel. Let it go and buy a new one.

That sounds weird to me. The reel can’t feel that there’s line on the spool. Only thing I can think of is line is winding up on the outside edge of the spool and jamming between the spool and frame. Try and see if there’s some play/slack, side-to-side movement in the spool.

I guess if there’s too much line on the spool, it could rub the overhead guide rail over the spool. In that case the line would be so overfilled that the previous suggestion would also be very possible with line spilling over the edges of the spool

Check the guide. See if there is any grinding when you put any tension on the guide. I have always enjoyed those reels so I wouldn't just throw it away. Also a good reel for your son to learn to take apart, clean, repair, etc.

See if line is building up on one sided the spool. If it is, you probably have a bad pawl. This is one of the first things to go bad on a reel. Replace the pawl and it should be good to go. You can find em online for a few bucks.

It did do this. Not real bad but noticeable. I’ll try that. Thanks guys.

And I know it’s only a $30 reel but if it gives my FIL some joy seeing his grandson use his reel it’s worth trying to fix.

I believe this is the replacement for it. May see if you can find it locally just to make sure.

I dont know where your located, but if you want it to be fixed properly, bring it to someone who cleans/repairs reels and pay the $15-$20 to have them go through it completely. That way your son is happy, and so is FIL.
I have a couple reels in the $40-$50 range that i bring to get cleaned every year, and i even replaced a bent handle on one instead of just buying a new reel. Nothing wrong with keeping up maintenance even on the cheap equipment.

Another alternative is to take it apart yourself, clean it, and re grease it. There are videos on YouTube for nearly every reel disassembly. I enjoy doing it but I can see why some would rather have it professionally serviced.

I tried that once. Then i ended up having to bring the reel (in pieces) to someone who know what they were doing anyway so that they could fix it. Too many small pieces for me. I rather someone else do it for me

Next time bring it to me, baw. I do all of my own. Just need the exploded diagram and parts list.

If I'm on your end, I'll take you upon that. Unfortunately, I haven't been down I-49 since before I sold my other house. We need to make one more Lacassine trip before the baby comes, because I'm fairly sure the trips will be few and far between for at least a few months after.
