I’m about to upgrade my .223 to the 6.5 Grendel. Those who have one and deer hunt with it what are it’s limitations and what factory load do you recommend. I do not reload. TIA

I recently had a 6.8 spc custom built. The 6.5 Grendel excels beyond 250 yds or so but if you're shooting < 200 you might look into the 6.8.

Why? They are ballistically similar at close range, but the Grendel is vastly superior at longer ranges.

OP: I have one. I have killed a nice buck with it. Use the Hornady 123g SST rounds. It's a great round for target shooting and for whitetail.

At 200 yards, you should not have any limitations. The round stays supersonic to about 1000 yards at or above sea level.

The Grendel and 6.8SPC both have their devout camps, but I would stick with the Grendel as it's popularity is rapidly growing while the 6.8SPC popularity is stagnant or fading.

Grendel’s good on deer to around 400-450 yards. I order my hunting ammo from precisionfirearms.com. I use the 120gr Barnes ttsx. They’re expensive, about $3.10 a round after shipping but if you only shoot a couple times a year at deer, it’s worth it.

How is this on killing deer? I shoot the Hornady SST on live animals out of my 6.5 Grendel and the Black on the range since I thought it was more of a target round.

So what 6.8 round is the US Army going to use in their new assault rifle.

LINK

A new Army assault rifle will tear through any body armor with the pressure of a battle tank, strike from unprecedented ranges, and withstand the rigors of weather, terrain and soldier use, Army Chief of Staff. Gen. Mark Milley told The Military Times.

The new 6.8mm rifles, which are expected to be in use by 2022, will offer major improvements in capabilities over the decades-old M16 and M4 weapons, the Army claims.

I have both but have not shot a deer with the 6.5 as it’s new.

My son shot one with the 6.8. Dead right there.

They are about identical out to ~350yds.
The standard bullet in the 6.8 is 110gr
Standard in the 6.5 is 123gr

I was having issues with my 6.5 but think I’ve figured it out. I think it was the trigger. Took the trigger out of my 6.5cm and put it in there and it seems to work fine but need to but son bullets through it to make sure. I’m upgrading the trigger in the 6.5cm.

Not the 6.8 SPC, it's a telescopic cartridge. While it sounds like the bullet is going to be 6.8mm diameter, I'd be willing to bet it will be a different design than the squatty bullet the 6.8SPC uses if it's going to meet their long range claims.

MWP. It’s a ballistic tip. It opens well fragments and kills them dead.

Easternrio,
Disclosure: I've never shot a 6.5 Grendel. Having said that, I've hunted extensively w/ a 6.5 JDJ, a 6.5 cal handgun w/ a 14" barrel. The 6.5 JDJ and Grendel are ballistic twins. Using the handgun barrel I've killed about #25 whitetail deer, 2 pronghorn antelope and 2 mule deer. 80% or so of my kills were w/ the 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Other bullets that worked well in the JDJ included the 120 gr spire point bullets from Speer and Sierra. The 129 gr SST load only runs about 2275 fps. I'm afraid that might night be enough velocity for the bullet to to expand. The 123 gr SST runs about 2575 fps and might be a better load. I've read of mixed results using the ELD bullets (like the Black load) at reduced velocities. Personally, I'd go w/ a load using the 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet.

I have one and love it. Killed a buck at 235 yards with it last year (123 grain SST). It's very accurate and very little recoil. I wanted a round that I could effectively hunt deer/hogs with as well as target shoot out to 500 yards or so. The Grendel fit that bill best for me.

ETA: You will need to buy Grendel specific mags. Standard AR mags will work but you'll only be able to load 3-4 rounds at a time.
