I've spent more on 45-70 ammo then I have the gun. Shot 2 deer last week with this same bullet. Cva optima elite with bergara barrel. Picked it up for $250 like new.

Ha. It should factor in to what gun you're buying. 7mm-08 has been very scarce. In the past 2 months I've seen it on ammo seek only once or twice from Nosler $$$$$

I fail to see the issue with that. An an old gun forum I used to post on, some guy was really getting into reloading for hunting and target practice. Bought a big used reloading set off of someone, and it had several sets of dies with it. He ended up buying about a half dozen guns because he was set up to make ammo for them.

Yep. I recently ordered a 17HM2 because the ammo was readily available. Seeing how 22lr goes during every purchase scare, I picked one up and tons of ammo. I'll be damned if my son can't plink cans, squirrels, etc when he wants to. And when 22lr comes back around, we'll use that.

To a point, yes. You have to decide a couple things- is the ammo itself competent in what you would use it for, and can you find a gun at a reasonable price?

Next questions would depend on future availability, if that comes to it.

For example- 7.62x39mm Tula, Wolf etc is and remains the cheapest, most plentiful new manufactured centerfire rifle ammo I've come across. It's enough to "do the job", and although it's jumped way up in price, you can still get a case for under $500 if you know where to look.
If you have any way to shoot it (AK, SKS, etc), it's the best thing going.

Of moderate interest right now, is 7.62x38R (that's the Nagant revolver ammo). The revolvers are fugly and used to be cheap, and are now hard to find...
you can buy a can of surplus ammo (1092 rds) for $249 + s/h.
If you can get a line on one of the revolvers for reasonable, that's probably the best priced centerfire ammo around. If it shoots, it beats a stick.
I don't think there's another gun that can use it.
