That gun is capable of shooting much better than that. If you'd like to get the groups smaller you may want to try some different bullets.

2" is plenty good enough for deer hunting though.

Oh no I'm talking about that caliber in the handi-rifle. A .500 S&W crack barrel would be cool as hell.

i think you can buy different caliber barrels in the handi rifle. years ago i remember looking at a list of barrels you could buy. pretty cool stuff.

Actually, what would be really cool would be a .460 S&W. Supposedly a 200 yard caliber out of a handgun. I bet it would shoot very flat out of a 22" barrel.

Oh yes I am sure the gun is capable of much better shooting and as you mentioned different ammo and better glass would help. Also a better shooter would help. I am by no means, nor claim to be, a great shot, but it definitely gets the job done.

The .444 is one of those calibers that I don't understand where it came from.

.444 was developed from the .44 magnum round, which is actually .429. The 444 is just a marketing angle

I have a 444. I don't have any experience with a 45-70. The 444 is a beast though.

I read on here a while back that the .35 whelen would be legalized next year in La. I can't confirm that though. They are VERY popular up here in Central Ms. I recently got a 44 mag. I figured it would do what I needed it for and one day my son could use it to learn to shoot a rifle. The 444's and 45/70's just kick too dang much!

To be honest it just chot it before its it comes down to personal preference. I have both and shoot the 45-70 far more often. It has killed many deer and puts them down hard. I would also wait to get the .35 if they legalize it. I have shot it and its just a really effective round and not as bad on the sholder. THe main thing with the handi rifle is the hard trigger pull. I got a gun smith to soften both of mine and I shoot much better with them. Good luck

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the .35whelen and the .35remington?

I have a Marlin lever action .35remington my grandfather gave me. I just explain it as a 30-30 on roide! It's an awesome round.

Yes, there IS a difference. The two rounds are VERY different. Here's some additional info.

MsandLa,
For deer hunting at ranges appropriate for the 444 Marlin or 45/70, the deer will not know the difference. (Neither will your shoulder....It'll still hurt!) Using factory loads, 45/70 will push a 350 gr bullet to 1800 fps. The 444 will push a 240 gr bullet to 2400 fps. The factory 45/70 loads run at reduced pressure in deference to older 45/70 guns out there that might kaboom w/ higher pressure loads. Consequently, if loading for a modern constuction gun (like the Handi-Rifle), a careful handloader can greatly improve the 45/70, making it more versatile than the 444. If you don't handload, I'd get whichever round you can most easily get factory loaded ammo for. As already mentioned, there are a LOT of newer loads available, especially w/ the LeveRevolution loads.
