If you aren't going to strap it to a pack and lug it up and down mountains, that ruger guide gun is about the ultimate non-winchester .338 that they make.

BUT, the winchester options are wayyyyy better. The alaskan is the coolest. The super grade is the best. Extreme weather is best for the cool kids.

Optics wise - trijicon accupoint 3-9 mil dot is tits.

A light .375 is pretty damned rough.

Friend of mine has a Browning X Bolt in 375 H&H that weighs slightly over 7 pounds without a scope.

The recoil is stout, but very manageable. 270 grainers at 2690 fps.

Reminds me a little of a 12 gauge with a #4 turkey load.

As someone who prides himself on not being a recoil sensitive bitch, this dont track

Id rather shoot 20 rounds out of my .338 off the bench than 5 full blast turkey loads out of a pump or Crack barrel 12ga

I feel like most of the shoulder beatings I've gotten have been on the back end of 12 gauges.

Tracks for me.

Then again, it has been sometime since I've shot the 12 gauge pump with 3" shells, but the .375's recoil (which I shot much more recently) seemed similar.

I might be biased. My first 375 was probably 7 pounds soaking wet and the recoil was pretty horrible. It was damned difficult to shoot. Likewise, I find just about any full tilt load out of a 12ga to be pretty damned bad. I shot one of those $10/ea turkey shells out of my friends benelli and it was God awful terrible. Way worse than the .375 to me, which itself was way worse than my .338

The worst I have ever shot was a 12ga Crack barrel slug gun that weighs about 5 pounds. Absolutely terrible recoil, but that turkey shell wasn't far behind it

Hate to be Devils advocate here but OP may want to check out 8.6 Blackout depending on his range and what he's going for

Hey HDC, the 8.6 is a nice round but while researching there were problems with finding ammo for it. The .338 appears to be a lil more available

Thanks for the offer Beaux, but it’s the availability of the ammo that concerns me with the Wby.

They are fine shooting guns and I have a couple of other calibers in the cabinet that don’t get taken out much because of scarce ammo.

I’ve shot Weatherby for years and have no trouble finding ammo. It’s not at Walmarks, but still easy to find.
My 300 WBY is great elk medicine.

That's the scope I'm leaning towards. My hunting podnah stepped up to Zeiss last year, but my tight arse will not let that happen.

Yeah I’m long past trying to pretend I “need” any more guns. I want, and that’s enough.

I had a Winchester pump 12ga from the 80s that really sucked to shoot. If my shoulder is going to get beat up then might as we’ll be a big arse rifle round and not a run of the mill shotgun

I dont find a 9 pound 338 with a good stock to be nearly as bad as a pump 12ga with stiff loads.

Best i can remember, everyone who's ever shot mine said something to the effect of "well thats not so bad."

I wouldn't want a 5 pound .338 but with a normal rifle it isn't bad at all.

I don’t really hunt other than the occasional hog (.308 for that), so when I get a 338 it’ll be the heaviest one I can find. I’ll go with the 338 Lapua bc I like the name and why not.

See that’s what I’m talking about. Sometimes “why not” trumps logical reasoning.

I’m convinced and placing the order for the .338 on Monday.
