I have some money on a commission card, and was looking to get a new gun. I like the Ruger Americans and I would use it for calling in predators with a thermal, and I have a newborn daughter so when she’s old enough to deer hunt I’d like something she can shoot her first deer with possibly.

I’m stuck between the Ruger American gen 2 ranch in 22 creed and the prairie in .22 ARC.

For a bolt gun go 22 creed.

What he said. Only good reason to go ARC is so it’ll fit in AR platform rifles.

That said, the ranch vs prairie are very different guns. Handle them both first if you can, prairie is going to have a much heavier barrel and will lend itself to shooting supported.

The next caliber gun I get will probably be a .22 creed.

This. Get the cripplemoor

Eta: is it cool to bag on the other needmoors like the 6.5?

The ARC will be much more pleasant to shoot for your daughter. It’s just a really efficient cartridge.

You’ll sacrifice a little velocity to the 22 Creed but won’t have throat erosion issues as fast.

At typical deer hunting ranges, why burn 2x the powder ?

Head shot 2 does last season with the 22ARC @ 100 yards. Surprisingly accurate for a “cheap” ruger

I just built an AR in .22 arc. Still working up a load for it but have been very pleased with it so far. Will be my night gun.

I’m using 80 grain bullets in it but I had ~8 lbs of 6.5 staball that I wasn’t using for anything else and it works well in the 22 arc.
Last session I was getting 2627 fps and a 8.7 s/d with a 16” barrel. Very pleased with that.
Grouping is a little less than an inch at 100yds.

ETA: ARC gets just shy of 32 gr of Staball which is a small ball powder

If I used Varget it would be 27 gr

Creedmoor would hold 44 gr and according to the Hodgdon website uses magnum powders (h1000, retumbo, IMR 7828) which are harder to find and expensive
