In this podcast, I share about my mistakes last year, my plans this year and how I hope to pull them off. I have a lot to learn about this process, but I am enjoying it. Also, I have some pictures of the mixes that I’m using on my Facebook page, Restoring the Ground.

Levee has shared with me the food plot plan that was written up for him. We are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I know that he has already had great success with his plan and I’m hoping to succeed with my plan. I do think that it will take me 2-3 years to truly get the full results that I am looking for.

Please give me your feedback and what your plans are for the year.

I widening mine today with the excavator/brush cutter and my son is bush hogging . We will disk in the next couple weeks if we get a little rain. We will plant our plots at home in mid October and at our place in woodville on the 20th/21st of October. We will be using the Gatlin feed premix. I think it’s a 6 way.

Local feed store has a mix that I’ll use again this year.

Really dry right now though but even at that I’m a few weeks away from planting

I’m planting next weekend, but wish that I was planting 2 weeks later. Unfortunately, my schedule will not allow it, so I have to do it while I can.

I’m really looking forward to the results of this blend.

This is what I am doing per acre.

19 pounds wheat
10 pounds oat
9 pounds triticale
2 pounds daikon radish
4 pounds winter peas
1 pound Balansa clover
1 pound crimson clover
1 pound berseem clover
1/2 pound Persian clover

Adding per acre
1.5 pound of Balansa clover
1.5 pounds bayou kale
3 pounds of brassicas

We are going 100% regenerative picking up where we left off in the spring.

We will roller crimp the fields and drill seed mixes from drop tine seed to work towards no chemicals and no fertilizer. Will be a total commitment, one we haven’t ever done before hopefully will give us results over the long haul.

I'm very interested to hear how the drop tine seed mix works for you. I had originally thought maybe some of his seed was pricey per acre, but then after I looked at my mix, I realized it isn't that much more expensive than what I am planning to do this year.

Regen mix 50 acres worth

* should add that I planted Crimson Clover at 25lbs/A last year and expecting a volunteer crop back this spring, and I said I wasn’t going to use Green Cover, but my seed guy could only get those specific varieties from Green Cover. I ordered straight from Green Cover and got the seed very fast and their local Rep. was extremely easy to deal with.

My normal mix. 60 acres worth.

All will be no-till drilled because of the drought. I usually disk, dual, spread seed/fert mix then lightly drag. The normal mix will be fertilized at 75lbs of Nitrogen and a maintenance shot of Phosphorus and potash whenever I get the chance after planting and a known rain is coming. The Regen mix won’t be fertilized, but some will be drilled into standing soybeans and joint vetch. That mix was given by a consultant at Understanding Ag after I did a Haney Test, PLFA test and TND test. That mix is supposedly based on the results of those 3 soil tests, what & when I plan to plant next spring (Early-Mid April), chemicals previously sprayed, and deer population. 70lbs/A doesn’t sound like a lot, but I have to trust the consultant regarding that.

I just assumed that was Restoringtheground. That mix looks a lot like the mix he mentioned in his podcast.
What are you planting Levee?

On your regen mix, is that in large tots, or 50 pound bags?

I ask because I really like that mix but o would only need 500-600 pounds if I went that direction in the future.

My two fields near the camp which are about 3.5 acres total (barnyard and a very large field right in front of the camp) I planted browntop Miller and clay peas in May. They provided a lot of good cover crop and food which is still being munched on by deer, turkey, doves and quail. In those two fields I’ve ordered and received five bags of GreenCover seed Fall Heavy Browse Release blend. That ended up being about $500 but with free delivery. Drilling directly into our standing vegetation a week after terminating with glyphosate via tractor boom sprayer.

I plan on spraying early October.

The other five plots will be terminated the same time and we will drill (Tar River Saya 507)
Gulf Rye
Winter Wheat
Buck Oats
Ladino Clover
8-24-24 fertilizer

This will be our cover crop for next May when we will put in the GreenCover seed summer release blend.

After that, we will determine what was best received by the deer using excluders in each field and adjust our seed for the future from there. Reducing our herbicide and fertilizer by 25% every year for four years until we don’t need it.

It’s definitely needed this year due to drought and lots of weeds that flourished as a result of the drought.

I have the majority in totes, but I also have a few bags. I wanted to use bags when calibrating my drill.

I believe they would send all of it in bags if you wanted

Did you pick these, or did a consultant? Wondering why they would suggest a ladino clover for Regen purposes.

*edit- or is that not in Regen areas?

I’m going cut and spray a few areas tomorrow. I’ll have to go plant in 2 weeks due to schedule.

Our consultant. This isn’t Regen areas yet. The clover will put nitrogen in the ground though.

Depends where you are, and some people can afford to spray even if they become an issue. I have never had army worm problems after the 2nd week of September.
