20 year old gun carry situation

Another one of my many stupid questions here….
My son is 20 years old and is very responsible and mature. He often drives through the hood at 4:30 AM on the way to fish or sometimes is at a boat launch in the early morning hours near a bad area.
I know he can’t legally own a handgun, but can own a shotgun. I was thinking of getting him some kind of snubbed shotgun or whatever you call it. I need to have him attend a gun safety class first.
Will the gun ranges allow a 20 year old to attend?

quote:Has to be 21 to shoot handguns unaccompanied by law, 18 for shotguns or rifles. But some ranges might have their own 21+ rules. But pretty much everywhere will let him shoot if you’re there with him.

As in under 18" barrel or overall length under 26" in total length? Excellent plan

The smallest there is.
But someone already mentioned that I can get him a handgun so I will probably go that route.

And teach him to stay out of the ghetto or places they congregate.

It’s either, you’re old enough to serve in the military, drink and buy a dang pistol….or you’re not.

Get him a Smith & Wesson Governor or a Taurus Judge. When I bought mine the S&W held 6 rounds and the Judge only 5.
Will shoot .410, .45 ACP and 45 Long Colt.
I alternate every other round in mine with .410's and ACP's.
They make specialized self-defense loads for these as well.

Make sure he gets some basic safety education. Doesn't have to be a formal class or anything, just the basics. Muzzle safety, trigger discipline, not to point it at anything you don't intend to shoot. Not leaving it in his truck, especially if the boat launch he's going to is in a rough area. When he's legally justified in using his weapon. How to handle being approached by police if he's carrying. Etc
Most of this is all common sense for those of us who are older and have been around firearms for most of our lives. But 20 year olds probably need to get at least a crash course from someone with some experience, whether its dad, uncles, family friend, or a class with a professional instructor.

If youre going to carry a handgun it needs to be much more than basic. Handguns are dangerous and carrying can be dangerous if not done responsibly.

If the "rules of gun ownership" ever get amended, this should be rule #1.

Bought my son a Glock 19 when he was 19.
He has been shooting at the range with me and hunting since he was little and was very good with gun safety. He also shot trap on his school team for several years and safety is beaten into them.
We live in TN and the law is they can have a handgun but can't buy it themselves.

Good Dad
Mine received a S&W shield for his HS graduation gift.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6
