That's why we don't compete with Florida. Not because we aren't supporting the fish numbers.
I agree completely, but relative to the ecosystem as a whole. It starts with getting people to care about the resource in its entirety.

No that's not what I said. Just talking in general, a lot of fisherman are pussies and most are from Florida. The arguments on Instagram are comedy gold.
Unrelated to the OP, but I once posted a pic of about 20 reds on the deck and some poster boy came at me blabbing about keeping fish and acting like he wanted to kill me and my family. Instagram deleted my post.

The tarpon rodeo is an embarrassment. Times have changed, quit killing fish for wanton waste and getting a trophy for doing so.
In my younger days I won a few TR trophies.
So it was cool while you were enjoying it, but now that you no longer enjoy, everyone should stop?
GTFO.
Shitty poster on every board.

Ah. Sorry. I agree with you. You'd think with the way some of those guys talk, every time a trout his ice a unicorn dies.
Regardless, all these changes we sit around here talking about in our own state start with us. I keep using this as an example because it's current, but the Now or Neverglades Declaration was angler-driven. If we want change re: big oil, actual enforcement of the coastal master plan, or privatization of marshlands, we're the voices to get that started.
Not to be repetitive, but our resource is twice theirs (Florida's), but in order to preserve that, we need to be proud of it. I can't tell you how many times I've fished with friends from Alabama or Florida where they tell me that we don't appreciate what we have here. Sadly, pictures like the one Barf posted, and running around the marsh looking at oilfield trash reinforce that sentiment.
eta: This might be a long shot, but it also starts with productive discussion instead of a bunch of bro dudes trying to bite each others' heads off

But Cocodrie is a shithole filled with rusty well heads, sunken shrimp boats, trailers in the sky, etc.
What's wrong with rusty well heads? Most hold good amounts of fish and are fine structure. Or the camps for that matter, I know what you're talking about, but most camps down there are fair to decent. Why are super nice camps a necessity for you to enjoy the environment down there?

Yeah I don't really understand where he's going with that one. That's the kind of stuff that makes Louisiana unique to the rest of the world.

The Florida Everglades are being sold out to the sugar industry by our state and federal legislators. Fish kills down the Indian River and Caloosahatchee from algae blooms are all too common now. It's just depressing to look at.
Don't buy Domino brand sugar in your grocery store. They are the main culprits in this mess. Only way to fix the problem is hit them in the pocketbook.
We also have idiots like this guide Artie Price to deal with down here. He holds a big Tarpon next to his boat so sharks can tear it apart. I equal it with tying up a trophy whitetail and letting the coyotes just go to town
Fishing guide feeds the Sharks.
I fish BGP, Johns Pass, Stump Pass, all the way down to Big Carlos Pass regularly. The fishery has fallen off during the last several years. Sometimes I hate the regulations when I'm over slot on a beautiful trout, redfish, or snook and want to fill my freezer, but I know those breeders are the future of our fishery.
With all that hot air said, I have been successful on tarpon trips but never with light line tackle. We don't even try to bring them to the shallows for photo shots. Doing so just increases the odds of the fish being eaten by Bulls and Hammerheads. I want someone else to feel that rush of hooking up on a Silver King in the future.

Or you can buy some coon pops like he's holding. They don't come with a circle hook or plastic, you have to wrap the wire around a hook like shown and stick a cocahoe on there. Put about an 8' leader on your trolling reels and the longest you can cast on your casting reels. Slow drift the "trolling" baits set up throughout the water column (~50' of water depth IIRC) at about 2 knots or so. Lot of people use trolling motors. When you mark a school or see them, start casting your casting rods (7000's or Calcutta 700's). When you hook 'em, they throw the weight that's wrapped around.
Yeah, never mind.

You guys crack me up with this stuff. The species is doing just fine. If you cared that much about just saving a fish's life you don't plan to eat you would never hook one, especially on light tackle or fly gear.

A big tarpon in S Florida is something I'd like to catch within the next few ears of my life. Ideally on the fly, but beggars can't be choosers.
eta: my brother in law has done it a couple of times and said it was pretty underwhelming

The inshore fishery in Louisiana is twice as good as Florida's - from the standpoint of the sheer vastness of the marsh, the quantity of the fish, and the health of the fishery.

Fly fishing for juvenile Tarpon in the backwater is hard to beat just for the fact that they spend almost as much time in the air than in the water.
Hooking up with a 50-60 year old fish in the deep pass is a whole different ballgame. I don't know what it is I just feel they have earned a spot to be respected. Maybe they use those huge eyes to look deep into my soul.
I know I am a crappy poster on your board who doesn't even live in LA. But I genuinely love this board because of the appreciation of wildlife, habitats, and general knowledge that gets passed along.
You Tiger fans are alright by me, I just have that one weekend per year that I put my hate glasses on. If any of you make it down my way I'll be happy to buy some beers and get some lines tight.

There's a reason people don't do it. It's boring as shite until you hook one. Then it's a very exciting fight. I've been in the boat for a few, but have only caught one myself. It's enough for me to agree to go on the trip once every other year, but not enough for me to rush out and do it myself.
