Jim Hogg County
30*
.270 Winchester Model 70
Hunting culls. Moved to the south end of the lease to try to escape the turkeys. They don’t call them corn vacuums for nothing. Had a doe and her yearling try to come to the feeder yesterday evening, and the gobblers (seven big boys at the time) all puffed up, 2 fanned out, and it made the deer hesitate. When they came in, they were barely bigger than the turkeys.

Power went out about 2 am, which cut off my CPAP machine. Back on at 5, so I could see to get dressed and power up the coffee pot.
Son on stand between River and slough. 257 WBY for him. He killed a doe and pig yesterday. Said it was the 20th consecutive year he’s killed a big game animal. He’s 26.

Area 2
34° slight southeast wind
28 nosler
Hunting the area I killed a good 8pt in last year. On the downwind side of 2 pretty big cutover tracts. I’ve been waiting for this wind to come back here. It’s a little over a mile walk, but the trail is flooded this year so it took a while in hip boots to get back here. Hopefully that water has kept everyone out of here. Found a couple fresh scrapes on the walk in, so that’s a plus. Only shooting if I plan to get him mounted because it’s going to be tough getting one out of here.
Good luck baws! It could happen today!

Not yet. Probably still a couple of days away from the first real chase.

Just out of curiosity, do you own your own land over there, or are you in a club? Just curious what your set up is like.

Wife and her cousins put the farm in CRP fifteen years ago. We formed a club, but it’s just family members.

Retired from 33 years of air traffic control. Even then, I hunted a lot. For most of my career, I had places I could get to quickly for a morning or evening hunt. Shift work has gotten a bunch of deer killed.

That’s a fact. Nothing like taking 2 vacation days and being off a whole week. If I had a mon-fri job, I’d have to join a club. There’s no way I could hunt public land only on weekends.

It's a grind but somebody has to do it haha. Luckily we aren't working 6 days a week this year

I hate nights but definitely enjoy my vacation time. I’d imagine I’ll be on days before I retire.

We eventually went to permanent days off. It sure helped to plan outside activities.

I can’t imagine a more stressful job than air traffic controller.I was ICU nurse for 31 years,I was responsible for 1-2 lives.ATC’s responsible for lots of lives.
It was exhausting my last years,I worked 12 hour shifts and I was on edge, high alert the whole, time.
Unfortunately,I’m the same way in a deer stand. No dozing or reading books,I’m on edge, ready to shoot at any moment.I’ve learned the hard way good bucks can pop up at anytime and don’t stand around waiting to be shot.
