they were probably signing the iadc reports and the media blew it up.

Speaking of...I'd be interested to see any of those IADC reports for the previous days. It's doubtful they ever made it off the rig though.
Couple weeks ago, I posted that I'd seen a different daily report for the day of, and day before the explosion, than what was posted on the web. It wasn't an IADC report, but a BP well report from their reporting program. I'm not saying that means anything (ie. coverup). I'm just saying I saw something different.

I don't have a problem with BP holding workers, as long as..
A) it was not against the employees' will and
B) they were paid for it.

Against the employees' will? I'm certain that cramped quarters on the deck of the Damon Bankston beat the daylights out of the alternatives - bobbing around the GOM or on the burning hulk of the Deepwater Horizon.

Well the best time to get a statement is right after an event happens, you are more likely to get the truth at that time. So there is nothing wrong with them getting statements.
When you are involved in an auto accident, the Police take written statements from those involved and witnesses to the accident.
This is standard procedure and nothing wrong with this.
You also need to remember that a Search and Rescue operation was ongoing, and I'm sure everyone hoped the missing persons would be found alive. The company did not want the news of deaths to get out to media sources, families etc until it was confirmed.
BP would have looked bad if this info had all gotten out that the people were deceased and they were found the next day in a life raft in the gulf.
