Could it possible that that number could be over 100,000 bbls a day?

So if the estimates of 5000bpd is accurate what would be the estimate if the well was free flowing around or outside of the BOP?
Unless they have an idea of AOF that's probably impossible to know. The only limits to volume would be the annulus, drill pipe ID, and casing ID.

Probably not much different. The only thing restricting flow now is a kink in the riser. If it bridged over and came around the casing the flow would probably be less. More restrictive than flowing through nice clean pipe as it is now.
I think you're wrong

This doensnt do anything to stop the flow, it only breaks it down.

Right but wouldn't that at least help to protect the coastlines?

Are we thinking on the lines of channeling around the entire well bore?

Yes, free flowing unrestricted out of the well bore.

quote:That's about the only way I could see the flow regime changing. We know from pics on the USCG it's leaking from the drill string, as well as from the casing as it is. Remove the BOP and not much changes, assuming the BOP isn't partially closed. Unless I'm missing something...

That certainly would change things.

I'm no engineer so I dont know, maybe someone will more knowledge could chime in on this.

I wish I understood like .1% of what you guys are saying ... HOW MANY MORE THINGS CAN THEY TRY TO CLOSE THIS DAMN FLOW?????

Then what?

Don't know what choke was used for the test. But at that depth, back pressure would be 2,100-2,200 psi?
Not sure what you mean by back pressure (wellhead pressure??) but reservoir pressure at that depth was likely somewhere around 15000psi

Answer this question....

So if the estimates of 5000bpd is accurate what would be the estimate if the well was free flowing around or outside of the BOP?

Highly unlikely that the well was flowing outside of the wellhead/BOP. If that were the case the ROV would clearly to be able to see that. Its likely leaking from a couple places in the damaged riser. The sum of all those leaks is likely 5000bopd
Posted on 5/1/10 at 10:40 pm to tgrbaitn08
Its not flowing outside the BOPs.
