Hmmmm. We are in Gulf Shores all week. Parents just went on evening walk on the beach and came back with "tar" spots on the bottom of their feet. Just like they used to get on Grand Isle back in the day.
According to the maps it isn't anywhere close and I am skeptical that it is actually oil on their feet but we have been on the beach all week and this is the first time we have seen this type of substance on the feet.
Just sayin. Take it fwiw.
Dude, do you NOT see all these maps showing the spill?
It's nowhere near fricking Gulf Shores right now.
Your folks aren't stepping on oil

This sentence is retarded, and I don't have a clue what it's supposed to mean.
What lines should I be "reading between"??

We dialed in as press. Apparently BP officials called the press conference but have not arrived to yet. CNN is reporting that BP is now saying the explosion and spill are the fault of transocean. I hope this is not BP trying to distance themself from what is going to be a nasty ecological mess.

coming from the LSU coastal studies program/Coastal Studies Institute. Dr. Dokka, who runs the WAVECIS LAB, predicted tonight that it will be in Bretton Sound within 24 hours NOAA says 48-72 hours. i dont know who is "more correct" but either way its gonna be bad. MS's barrier islands are going to get it pretty bad. he was a guest lecturer in my coastal modeling class

Let's be honest. We've known there was a chance of this happening for decades. We've been rolling the dice (ALL of us that live it a petroleum-based society) and it just came up sevens. Now we're going to have to deal with it. Only this time, let's not just get real mad for a while and then stop worrying about it, (see Hal Rothman, The Greening of a Nation) lets actually make some REAL changes.
1) More electric vehicles.
2) A comprehensive, national rail system. (yes, it may still run on petroleum in places where electrification isn't feasible, but will drastically reduce consumption, especially if people use it instead of flying)
3) Increased use of ethanol. Brazil is self-sufficient in ethanol made from sugar cane!
4) Do anything we can to wean ourselves from oil and gas, foreign or domestic.
All of this will require a comprehensive energy policy, cooperation between the public and private sector and, most importantly, TIME!
But it can be done.

Hey Luke, this would be the wife. frick you dip shite. Per the press conference the leak is actually 5000 barrels a day instead of 1000. No worries thats just roughly 300,000 gallons a day. I am sure that everything will be fine. A spill that is 10 times the valdez spill surely wont affect Gulf Shores and hey thats not tar on your feet folks because Luke says all is fine. frick you yet again you ignorant piece of shite.

Is the press conference public?

Of course they are going to try to cover their arse.

And, anyone who trusts BP to give an honest assessment of ANYTHING at this point is just kidding themselves. They know anything they say/release/admit will be coming back to them for years in depositions.
(And, that's a HUGE slick for only 1,000 bbls/day.)
ETA: The Coast Guard just admitted it's actually 5,000 bbls/day. In 52 days (less than the two months it will take to drill the relief well) it will pass the Exxon Valdez.

I dialed in and said I was press. I believe it is public. They chose to do it at this hour due to how bad the news is. This will be larger than Exxon Valdez within 7 days. US Govt is asking that BP deliver more booms to try to minimize damage. BP and the USCG are a little less chummy than they were at the other press conference today...

I'm not saying it will replace New York-LA, but it will on a lot of shorter routes. The Acela, which isn't even high-speed, is already competitive in the Northeast corridor (Boston-NY). It's much faster, especially when you can skip traffic, security, parking, etc.
I use Amtrak weekly and even now it's competitive with the airlines between Denver and Kansas City.
